(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

Mona looked at her drenched lantern with a frown. "We will need a new light source, if we are to continue on. Am I correct in assuming that these magelights will not last long, Nezrak?"

Nezrak nods to Mona. "Yes, you're quite right. I have another light spell prepared that will last a bit longer, but I doubt that It'll last long enough for us to completely search this place. So if anybody has alternate light sources left, they'd be better idea. Otherwise we'll have to move with haste, and it's really not going to be very safe in this place."

"Ah well, um, I have a lantern." Rillian moves up to the steps, using them as a table as he slowly unpacks his massive backpack, until he removes a lantern, and some oil. "Oh, look, I also have some candles if those would help?"

/ooc If requested Rillian will hand out some candles. Otherwise he will pack everything up, keeping oil refill and candles near the top of his pack.

ooc: Rillian has a bull's eye lantern, which means it illuminates farther than the hooded lantern at the expense of peripheral vision. Rillian has only one hand free now, as he is holding the lantern with his off-hand.

The cone-shape of the light is going to cause some problems for the normally abstract facing-less system of D&D. I am going to assume that if Rillian attacks an enemy, he focuses his light on the one he's attacking. Rillian can choose to change the "facing" of his lantern like a 3.0 shield spell (once per round as a free action).

Rillian ooc2:
Rillian, could you list in your character sheet the appropriate Armor check penalties, skill penalties and Speed penalty for your encumberance? It would make things a little faster for me.

Mona helped Rillian set up and ignite the bull's eye lantern, since he couldn't put it on the ground. She asked Rillian for a candle, unwilling to walk in the darkness without a light of her own. She loosed her shield so that she had a hand free to hold the candle. She kept a hand free so that she could perform her spell gestures.

ooc: If nobody objects, I shall move the story forward a few hours from now (when i get back home).

Rillian will offer to let Mona carry the lantern, but will still give her a candle, as well.

/ooc Ah, just checked the SRD...I had this memory that you could switch a bullseye between cone and normal...but its not there...oh well. However, it does provide clear illumination in a 60-foot cone and shadowy illumination in a 120-foot cone, so we should be far less likely to be surprised by something in front of us, at least. And if someone takes a candle, then we can also have some immediate surrounding light as well.

/ooc2
Um, that is all listed. He is not encumbered (total weight just under light, and listed at bottom), ACP (near the top) is listed at -2, and the skills he has ranks in are listed with a -2 penalty...Is there something I missed?

Scun shakes like a dog, spraying water all around. "Remind me what we are searching this place for again? Some sort of curative agent for your friends?" he says to Mona.

The still fiery Rasereit is red in the face as he pants from his exertion. He waits for a pat on the back or some other sign of appreciation from his friends. Receiving none whatsoever, he grumbles under his breath, "Bah... Ye ingrates. Ah kill one o' them cursed things all by meself, and do Ah get a word o' thanks? Nah, not one. Some lot these mates are..." He continues muttering in Dwarven, and so becomes unable to be understood.
Me Kerrin would'a given me a nice lick or two, aye, that she would...
He starts to clean off his axe blades and then realizes that they have only water on them. He then dries them on his pants and leans against a wall in grim silence, waiting for the party to continue on their way.

Mona agreed to carry the lantern, so as to free everyone else's hands of the burden. Also, she returned Rillian's candle.

To Scun she said: "We are to retrieve a tome that will might have information on the ailment itself as well as the cure." There was a flicker of emotion in her eyes, but it disappeared as quickly as it came.

Rillian: ooc
My bad, I thought that Rillian was moderately encumbered. A third recheck confirms that my calculations were off. Sorry about that.

After they had recovered somewhat from the battle, the party moved forward.

As they passed by the two doors, the party conducted a swift examination of the rooms behind them. The western door (the door to their right) was mostly covered in heaps of rubble. Water flowed in copious amounts from holes in the walls.

Rasereit:
Rasereit's racial expertise with stone told the dwarf that the rubble covering the floor in heaps might've belonged to the ceiling and the walls.

The eastern door was similar. Water also flowed from holes in the walls. There were actually a few surviving furnishings in the room, though of little value. A few shelves were carved into the walls making the room establishing the ancient purpose of the room as a storage room or a pantry. These shelves contained nothing but humidity and water drops.

When the party examined the end of the hall, they found what Nezrak saw earlier. It was a set of descending stairs. Water poured upon the slime covered steps into yet another room. A scan with the bull's eye lantern revealed that this room had a large depression that collected most of the water and left the rest of the huge room dry. Several doors were spotted as well as a doorless exit out of the room.

Scun frowns. "A book? These conditions are surely not very good for the chances of finding a dry book. But fear not, if it is there, we shall find it."

Scun prepares to go down the stairs very carefully, given that they are wet and slimy.

Nezrak looks down the stairs. "Well, no point in not going down.", he says. If nobody seems to take initiative in going down, Nezrak will do so, though he'll try to be extremely careful.
