(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

Nezrak, who had been preparing to cast another spell, lowers his hands when he sees their enemy fall. "Quickly, we need to help Rillian! Scun, do you have any healing spells left?", he says while he grabs his sword from the floor.

Scun will convert shield of faith to a cure light wounds for Rillian, then turn his attention back to the creature, to make sure it isn't regenerating.

Ogrins legs give out from under him, and he sits down on the ground. "Well, that was a close call." After catching his breath for a minute, he gets up to retrieve his dagger and rapier. Passing by Mona, he stops to look into her eyes. "Thanks, lass. Thought that was the end of me. That's another one I owe."

"You're welcome" Mona smiled.

Scun's healing brought Rillian back to consciousness (healed: 4, 3/6 hp). The half-orc observed the creature carefully. It wasn't regenerating but it was still alive, albeit unconscious.

After a few minutes, the party had recovered from the battle. Weapons were retrieved, wounds were bandaged and the area scanned for hostiles (none were found).

"What next?" Mona asked. "Do we search the rooms or go downstairs?"

Scun also converts mending into a cure minor for himself. "Before the creature, I wanted to go down, but now I'd rather stay up here and look around."

"Friends, we have only 1 day's food left, if we intend to stay longer, we will need to stock up on food. In addition, dont we have an arraingment with the ship to meet them on some day?"

"I brought a week's worth of food, so I have about 3 days left." Mona frowned as she looked up to the majority of the party. "I don't think a day's worth of my rations would be worth much to most of you. Except for Ogrin, of course."

She looked around at the two unexplored rooms. Her eyes saw the large crack. "That crack on the floor looks dangerous. I'm not sure if we can get across there"

Mona walked parallel to the crack, moving alongside the wall. She shined her light along its length, trying to see where it began and where it ended.

"It looks like it ends at the stairs. We could cross there. Or we can jump it. If anybody has any skill with stone, perhaps they can tell if the stairs are still stable"

"Ah'll do it" Razh moved over to the stairs, keeping his distance from the crack. The dwarf surveyed the area where the crack met the stairs, dwarf senses examining stone with the skill of a stonemason.

After a minute or two, the dwarf got up from his investigation. He informed the party in his colorful dwarven accent that the first set of steps (I18, I19)were unstable. He wasn't sure how much weight it could take before collapsing but he decided that it was unworthy of his trust nonetheless.

In short, to get around the crack there were two relatively safe ways:

1) Jump across the crack.

2) Jump down the stairs (5 feet minimum) and climb up, avoiding the unstable steps.

Though they weren't slippery, the steps were narrow. While in the current situation, they were not a threat, in more rushed circumstances jumping upon or running over the narrow steps could result in a nasty fall.

"Remember what the mephit said - the next level was full of 'crawlies', whatever that is. We might be jumping head-first into danger."
