[Adventure] The Paper Chase (Judge: renau1g)

[sblock=ooc]kal'Tarron spends a healing surge to gain 11 hp (42/44hp)[/sblock]

kal'Tarron looks at his axe blade. "No real blood in any of them. I won't defile my vestments with their ichor." He cleans his blade on a scrap of fabric drawn out of his pack, which he then tosses disdainfully into the rubble near the wall.

[sblock=ooc]there's no obvious door on the map (or is there?). I'll use my religion skill to investigate the temple for clues of where we might go from here.
religion check. (1d20 + 13=21)[/sblock]

One interior door leads out of this chamber, a stone affair riveted into place like the front doors - although much smaller than those. It's in the west end of the north wall, right next to where Baracus currently stands.

[sblock=OOC]The door is there on the map, but possibly not that obvious. See my post #249, earlier in the thread for description of the chamber, including the door:

This was obviously once the temple's central chamber, used for public ceremonies. In the centre it rises to a tall arched vault, perhaps fifty yards high, whilst to either side there is a colonnade supporting lower ceilings - maybe ten yards or so. Beneath these two lower-ceilinged areas the floor is covered with rubble and slabs of stone, parts of which are recognisable as having once been benches where people might have sat during services. At the far end of the temple a stone door is visible, next to a raised dais with shallow steps leading up to it on three sides. Its centrepiece is a stone altar, elaborately carved and stained dark with blood.

"Let's take a short break and do a thorough search of this area for any signs of the academics who may or may not have came here. If they did, I'd be hard pressed to figure out how they got past these guardians." Grys comments.

[sblock=OOC]
Grys uses a healing surge to get to 36 / 39 hit points and takes a short rest.

I told you it was a bad idea to come here! Mythra complains to the room at large as he tries to wipe zombie goo off his robes.

[sblock=ooc]
Spending 1 surge, also I assume we are taking a short rest?

Also only 2 surges left. We might need an extended rest sometime soon.

"No wonder nobody approaches here. Altough I am surprised that city tolerates such in it's middle. At the very least they should have put post in The Shard that this place needs cleaning. In our li...bwa..ahem...living area we wouldn't tolerate such."

Goliath priest walk along the walls of the ruined temple looking for text or maps. He doesn't pay much attention to signs of earlier passage, but is careful not to disturb any remains on the floor.

Serris sends some energy in Baracus's direction as he walks over.
[sblock=ooc]Ardent Surge for Baracus. Healing Surge + 5.
Ardent Surge (1d6=5)[/sblock]

He examines the door without touching it, to see if it's locked, sealed, or simply standing closed. "Odds are whatever's inside doesn't come out, so it's low priority in a low priority district. Doesn't help us though.

[sblock=raion]
I wasn't aware that any of the PCs could give a bonus to their healing.

If it is ok with Antithetist, we may want Serris to use Ardent Surge on all of the PCs with multiple short rests so that we end up using fewer healing surges and more PCs are closer up to full hit points when we do get into an encounter.

[sblock=OOC]I'm fine with multiple short rests, if you want to take that time out at this stage. Up to you!

Quick correction on what Grys said: the people who may or may not have come here weren't academics, but rather a hired bunch of 'field researchers' much like yourselves. Morgrave has more experience with fielding dungeon crawls than to do something silly like send a bunch of professors to an ancient temple. ;)[/sblock]

Like the front doors, this door's hinges have long since rusted away, and it has been bolted crudely into place. If the front doors are anything to go by then getting it open will likely require force, and will probably make a fair amount of noise.

Grys's more thorough search of the temple's central chamber turns up little of interest. He does however notice the dried and caked blood visible on the altar, as well as some candle stubs. It seems as if it has served a grim ceremonial purpose of some sort in fairly recent years. It's also clear that this place has been gutted of any possible valuables.

"Noise, or no noise, we should probably open up this door." Grys says.

Cool.

kal'Tarron, Mythra and Grys could all use a few more points to get to full if you wouldn't mind rolling a D6 for each of them. We might not want to do this for every encounter, but it looks like we can kill some time this time.

[sblock=healing]The power I used isn't a rest power, but an encounter healing power I didn't use mid-combat. I only have one, so we'd have to rest 5 per person, unless someone else has a healing power?[/sblock]
