Adventure with Darkness

First Post
I want to make an adventure similar to the movie Pitch Black (or more specifically the Gears of War level "Lethal Dusk") "EDIT: Vanishing on 7th Street is another example", I am currently thinking of having a Wizard specialising in magic associated with the Plane of Shadows (I can come up with some monsters by myself) the problem is the layout of the level, I want the players to have to move through the darkness but they need light (I was thinking of them stumbling over some lanterns with the oil)

I especially like the idea of Sunset, the start of the adventure is during the evening, enough Sun to damage the enemy, only the shadows are a problem. Then the night falls and the enemy can attack the players much more easily but the torches/lanterns protect the group, my problem is that with the lanterns the party are immune and without them they are dead

any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated

EDIT: The party are all Human, 3x Fighters, a Wizard, a Rogue and a Paladin all 3-4th level

Place it in a city with street lights and have the players go from A to B for whatever reason. They will be immune when in the light of a street light, but from one light to the other they need to rush and fight for their lives. Would that work? I don't know the movie unfortunately.

The movie is kinda irrelevant, survivors of a crashed spaceship are on a planet with three suns, permanent daylight except for 1 month every 22 years...which is 1 day away, vicious predators come from underground during this month to feed (I don't know what they fed on since there didn't seem to be any indigenous life besides them).

The city would be good except that I want it to be a dungeon adventure (as I type this I had a great idea of an abandoned town with the wizards tower in the center) so I will consider it but a wilderness, or nearly, adventure would be better

Instead of lanterns and torches, how about glowing lichen or something similar? The dungeon has patches of the stuff throughout, and the party can harvest it to take with them. The problem - it only glows for a short time after its been cut, so they have to rush to the next patch, and the next, and so forth. And if they run into an unexpected delay, such as someone falling into a pit or a stuck door...

If you want, you can even have the lichen be some sort of trap for the shadow wizard, designed to keep him imprisoned. He wants to get rid of it, the PC's definitely want to keep it around to fend off the shadow monsters. Can they reach some sort of deal?

Dandu Nice but will the Wizard prepare it? (I will include mini-boss monsters just in case) Thanks for pointing that out.

Croesus I didn't think of that either, Bio-luminescent Moss has a timer of X and then dies, maybe having the abandoned city (If I choose that, I'm still designing it) caved-in in places where the players can find it, but not during the day (or evening).

Or you could have what we call barin stones through the dungeon, rocks glowing with a warm light that does not reach too far.
