Adventures for a new DM

Guillaume

Julie and I miss her
Hi all. Now before everyone gets excited, I know that this has been asked many times before. I've read the threads and for the love of me can not remember the conclusion of those. So bear with me please.

Here is the situation, my wife wants to try her hand at DMing. She's played D&D 3e since it came out, but she's also played 2e and GURPS. For most of her "gaming career", I've been her DM.

Here's the catch. We're looking for a module/adventure to start her off. However, I've run/read a lot of 1st level published adventures. We need something new (I'll be a player in the game she'll run).

So, modules that will need to be ignored :

- The Sunless Citadel (I'm planning on running this one soon and its an integral part of my campaign),
- The Wizards Amulet (I read it three or four times),
- Almost all the Dungeon Magazine adventures published in numbers 83-95.
- Exceptions to above : The Valley of the Snails in Dungeon #87 and Thirds of Purloined Vellum in Dungeon #88. Are these any good for a very novice DM?
- The Burning Plague, my wife and I have already played three times through it. We'd like something different.

Things I'm thinking recommending :
- The Freeport series.
- The Kalamar Coin series.

What do you guys/gals think ?

Any comment welcome.

Thanks,

Guillaume

Not to plug my own stuff, but Of Sound Mind has a lot of DM advice worked into it. The psionics may complicate matters a tiny bit, but they're not a major component; it might be a good fit. In addition, lot of people like Nemoren's Vault; it's a great adventure, although a bit treasure-heavy.

Well, since you have "The Wizard's Amulet" then I recommend you follow it up with "The Crucible of Freya."

My players and I had a great time going through that module.

I highly recommend Of Sound Mind. Great stuff! See my replies to the thread on disliking psionics but liking OSM for my reasons! Whispering Woodwind also seems like it would be a great pick for a beginning DM (not to mention something fun to play, given Mark's excellent adventures that I've had the pleasure of playing through.

Let me second Nemoren's Vault. If you are starting with new characters, it gives a non standard every one in the tavern beginning to the adventure. It sets a plot hook that works with EVERY character background.

Of Sound Mind is one of the best modules I have ever played and run, it is a blast. I do not recommend it for a vigin DM because it could be so much more with a little experience. It is easily scalable and can be thrown in the middle of almost any campaign. I would let her try it on a second or third go as DM. But by all means, order it and play it.

The only reason I do not recommend the coin Trilogy for a first run is becasue of railroading. There are a few parts of the campaign that really railroad the characters and have to be worked with to set up proper character motivations. The railroading can be overcome with a little effort and besides that they are great adventures.

I am glad to see so many skilled writers making quality adventures:)

Well after reading your posts and some reviews, it seems she's going to try her hand at Nemoren's Vault. Unless she changes her mind...;)

Thanks for the comments and the advice.

Guillaume
