Adventures in Naming!

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of random name generation.

Then in my CyberPunk days, I found a name generator to be an incredible boon... the ability to just spit out REAL sounding names in game play. No longer does the young lady say something... it's now "Janet Illingsworth".

Well, tonight a friend brought over a copy of RPGObjects NPC Essentials (a pretty good read for moderately inexperienced and new DMs, IMO) and in the back there is a random name generator.

So we took it out for a spin.

the first name I pulled out of it, and I do not jest, was:

Ack'sakim AxeAxe.

No bull.

Ack'Sakim AxeAxe.

Better than that... he wasn't a dwarf or a half orc... Ack'Sakim AxeAxe was a halfling servant.

Better get that boy an Axe... I dunno why... just seems to NEED one.

So, any good tales of random name generation?

Hound...
(trying to figure out how to use Ack'Sakim AxeAxe somewhere in my sig...)

Bahahaha classic. Hmmm I know over the years I have run across a few that were just so wrong, but I don't think I recorded them for posterity anywhere (unfortunately)

In the rules for my name generator, I intentionally put in a few root words and such that make for, well, less than serious names when used in combination. They come up every once in a while. For some reason, when it kicks out names (from the tavern generator) like "The Lusty Nun" or "The Salty Seaman", I chuckle.

I think I used the random name function on the chargen program in the back of the 3E PHB and it named me Smitty of Blackmoor once. But I could be wrong.

Slight hijack:

Where can I find good sources of either tons of or random generation of non-english sounding but still real names?

IE

Chinese names
Norwiegan names
South American (any nationality) type names

etc etc?

I can do english-sounding random names in my head just fine. Other stuff, though...

not really a name generator, but...

...it's kind of semi-on-topic. You'll probably get a laugh out of this. I'm not even sure how to explain it...a random TV pilot episode tagline generator? See for yourself:

Got this on my first try:

He's a globe-trotting Jewish barbarian on a search for his missing sister. She's a psychotic Buddhist mercenary with the power to see death. They fight crime!

Change "Jewish" and "Buddhist" to appropriate D&D religions, and you've got yourself a campaign right there.

*runs off to get his dice*

Here's mine:

He's a shy drug-addicted master criminal with a mysterious suitcase handcuffed to his arm. She's a wealthy French-Canadian soap star prone to fits of savage, blood-crazed rage. They fight crime!

Thanks for posting that wacky site. I love it!
