Adventures in the Chaos Scar {Adventure One: Stick in the Mud}

"I would prefer to bring these bandits to us, as well. But if we cannot do so, could we start from the most recent site of an attack and track them back to their lair? I lack the skills to do so myself, but perhaps one of you can?" Chaihana looks around at the other people who've expressed interest in the task.

When the dwarf spoke about the dismembered corpses, the shifter could not but frown her nose.
"Such abnormal behavior must have an explanation. Perhaps they are not just thieves. There are foul undead that would remove parts of their victims, twisted wizards that craft a mere mockery of life with the assembled parts of other beings, even simple cultists could find mutilation among their practices. Have you any information of such groups in the area?" she spoke, finally, asking the dwarf.

"Cults ya say? Aye we've seen cults. But that sorta business you'll find on the other side of the wall." The Constable replied indicating the Colossal wall in the distance; that snaked in either direction as far as the eye could see.

"Taking pieces you say? This sounds like more than just banditry afoot." Ruz grins and appraises his new companions, seeming to like what he sees. He turns back to the dwarf "Any idea where these wretches are keeping camp? Otherwise is there a merchant heading through the area who needs guards? We could posibly draw them out that way?"

"Nah no idea Lad. Ask around if yew like. Ah'll let yew all handle the details."

They would dishonor the dead so? Torash asks, horrified by the suggestion. If they are indeed mere bandits, they are worthy of no respect and will receive no mercy from me. The dragonborn's face hardens into a determined glare.

After listening to Ruz, he nods his agreement. That would give them quite a surprise, he adds. Although maybe we should just pose as the merchants, that we seem an even smaller and less protected group.

"Ah'll let yew know then that their tastes have been runnin' to bigger and bigger prey. A small group may not whet their <ahem> appetites."

I lack the skills to do so myself, but perhaps one of you can?" Chaihana looks around at the other people who've expressed interest in the task.

"Ah can take yew there directly. Just be givin me the word ta do so." he added anxiously.

"you can lead us to their hideout?" Ruz asks, watching the reaction of the dwarf "That would save us some time." He looks at his new companions.

"I don't know about you, but the sooner we manage to resolve this, the sooner we receive our pay" He seens somewhat impatient.

"I think he meant lead us to the place the last attack occurred," Kyriel corrects Ruz gently. "In any event, there are two valid plans before us. To attempt to decoy the bandits into attacking a caravan we are protecting, allowing us to confront them directly...and to attempt to find clues and tracks from the most recent attack."

"Of the two, the investigation of the most recent attack requires the least amount of preparation. I suggest we try that path first. If it fails, we can then organize a caravan and try to bring them to us."

And it doesn't require us to put innocent lives at risk, Torash adds. While I like the idea of surprising them in the midst of their evil acts, it's not worth the shedding of more innocent blood. He nods, the decision made in his opinion, and waits for the constable to lead the way.

With the newly formed party's affirmation the Dwarven Constable heads out leading you to the site of the last attack. As you travel up the King's Road, the Massive Wall that is the boundary to the Chaos Scar occasionally gets enveloped by dense forest only to reappear again when you crest a hillock or make the occasional turn.
Finally you all arrive at the grisly scene, some two miles from town. Flies buzz around two dead horses still hitched the the skeleton of a large overturned wagon. Dark stains still blemish the dry cracked earth where guards and merchants must have fought and died.
"Well then Ah'll let yew get to it then." Ironhelm announces and leaves you to your own devices.

With a look of distaste, Torash moves over to the corpses of the horses. He gingerly moves the remains around with the flat of his blade, looking for any indication of how the horses died.

Torash inspects the equine carcasses and spots several several puncture wounds on both animals. Upon closer inspection of the wounds he finds the tip of a sharpened rock that has broken off in one of the horses. Either from a primitive arrowhead or spearhead.
