Adventures INSIDE a tavern

One of my potential plot hooks that could be taken tomorrow night (that I cribbed from a non-D&D/PF adventure...I think) is that the PCs go to the tavern because they need to retrieve an item that will let them get into a safe deposit box. While they're there, an urchin/delivery boy delivers a sealed message to the owner.

The seal is magical and when broken, the letter reads itself out loud. The owner is now cursed by his twin brother because the tavern owner falsified who was born first in order to get possession of the tavern when their parents died. As the letter finishes reading itself, the pieces of the wax seal fly away and magically create a portal to another dimension (I'm using the Far Realm). Creatures from said dimension come through and the PCs have to protect the patrons as well as destroy the portals.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember why people can't run out, but I know they can't, so it's up to the PCs to protect everyone or try their best.

Edit: The module I stole this from is called "A Curse at the Old Inn" for 4E. I'm pretty sure I got it from www.drivethrustuff.com.

I recall an adventure idea where someone was poisoning guests at an inn with a mold that turned them into zombies over night and then using the mold-zombies to work an underground tunnel beneath the inn. I forget what the tunnel's use was for ultimately.

could the doors be magically locked? i don't know any thng of 4.x d and d

According to the module (which I had misnamed and opened only by accident): Should characters try to batter the outer doors or windows, they find that
all damage is instantly repaired. They
cannot leave the inn.

So, I guess the answer is yes.

With all the ideas here, I can envision a campaign where the PCs intend to do some real adventuring, but keep getting diverted by a new problem at the tavern and never get around to the "big adventure".

The Stolen Beer / Wine -- Someone has stolen the receipe for a dwarven ale, the party needs to find out who. So, it is a taste tasting they go...

The night of the Walking Dead -- Party is trapped in a traven/inn while a zombie horde roams the streets during a holiday. The problem, someone inside is murdering them...

Den of Smugglers -- The tavern is not that it seems, smuggler go in and they don't come out.
