All I know is, I have more fun when we're mostly "all in it together" than when it's "me vs. them". Of course I need to spring stuff on them, get them in over their heads a bit now and then, that's also part of the fun. We help each other have fun when we are cooperating and on the same page.

I feel the same way. I'm not out to get them by any means, challenge yes. Nor do I encourage Player vs. Player. Sometimes it happens, but it can be counter-productive to the overall enjoyment of everyone.

The people who win are the ones who are willing to do anything at all to achieve dominance, even if it is short lived dominance, over the people around them.

Ambition and accomplishment are fundamental when they are only partialy (and not totaly) in conflict with other people while at the same time advantageous to these other people in many different ways- they are not just self serving but rather social attributes.

Life and the game should only be about conflict. You only have other people around you for the same reason a hog farmer keeps pigs around them.
Well, from what I can tell this is just wrong.

*Nods* Exactly, I as a DM may challenge them and make them feel they are over their head.

But, I work with the players and we play it as a cooperative game. I don't care about trying to kill them off, where is the fun when everyone is dead?

The fun for our group is playing together and enjoying the game together and playing through a adventure together. Hell even when there is adversity amongst the party, ie: conflicting character personalities/plots we still play it cooperatively, since that is still a aspect of the story/adventure.

Anything else, any other kind of playing, is a childish and naive waste of time.
Let's just cut to the chase and engage in knife-fights every Friday night! Nothing naive about trying to plant a shiv in your opponent's gut.

(damn, now I have part of the West Side Story score in my head...).
