Advice for Wizard/Archivist

Asmor

First Post
I've never played a prepared caster before, and I've only played a sorceress (albeit high level, 17th IIRC) for one or two sessions before she was killed.

Anyways, I'm going to be playing a wizard/archivist. I've only played one session as a level 1 wizard, and the DM said we could go ahead and bump up to level 2. I'd like to take level 2 as archivist.

Here are my stats (DM uses a high-powered rolling variant)

Str: 13 (+1)
Dex: 17 (+3)
Con: 16 (+3)
Int: 18 (+4)
Wis: 16 (+3)
Cha: 15 (+2)

Got a rat familiar, no specialization (specifically trying to make this character a generalist and seeker of knowledge). For feats, I've got Collegiate Wizard and Able Learner (fits the concept, and originally I was thinking of multiclassing into rogue for lore delver). Obviously, I'll need to take practiced spellcaster (maybe even twice), but that's a ways off.

Here are my 1st level spells known: Color Spray, Comprehend Languages, Familiar Pocket, Feather Fall, Grease, Hold Portal, Identify, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Summon Monster I

I'm trying for a utility wizard. When I get the exp and money I plan on scribing lots of scrolls and might even take some other item creation feats later on.

Eventually, I'll be going with the mystic theurge.

So... there it is. I'd appreciate any advice on pretty much anything. Spell selection, feats, skills, tactics. Just give me whatever you've got! :)

Okay, something more useful. If you're going Mystic Theurge, I'd recommend finishing your three levels of wizard and then taking up archivist unless you have a pressing reason not to. Getting second level spells as soon as possible is a very good thing.

Your options are better if you play a Cleric/Wizard (e.g., armor selection, attack progression, hit points, total spells, and turning undead).

While I don't doubt that cleric is better for sheer power, I like archivist better for the flavor. Besides, we already have a cleric.

Regarding the stats, the DM's system is 4d6 drop lowest, but you re-roll 1s and 2s (and keep rerolling until you get 3+).

i too am playing almost the same character as you, but with worse stats :P

we roll our stats the usual way, but then roll a d6 and add that many points (distributed however we want) among our other stats. so i have 20 INT and 20 WIS, pretty much everything else is a dump stat...

but im starting this character at lv4, so he is archivist 3 wizard 1. i like archivist better, and ive got no pressing reason to get a familiar. after archivist5 / wizard 1, i will take 4 levels of alienist and then go to mystic theurge. sure my character will be a little weak but my summon monsters will be powerful.

Or...
1st level: Wizard 1 or Archivist 1: Take Easy Metamagic (Dragon Magazine, lowers cost of one selected metamagic feat by 1) and Heighten Spell. This will allow you to heighten a cantrip to 2nd level in a first level slot.
2nd level: Wizard 1/Archivist 1
3rd level: Wizard2/Archivist 1
4th level: MT 1
and so on.

DM's homebrew. I honestly don't know a whole lot about it. Only thing as far as cosmology that I know is that spelljamming is, in theory, available (though only at high levels), so there's the whole plogiston/crystal sphere thing going on.

As far as gods, I think it's anything goes.
