Advice on a half dragon fighter

Hmm.. my fighter character seems to be moving further and further away from fighter.

I was just replying to your query of sorc vs. warmage. If you want to make a straight 20 Fighter, you can. I'd advise using a different race and picking up as many Fighter alternate class features and splat book feats as humanly possible if doing so.

Dungeoncrasher Fighter and Chain Tripper Fighter are both solid builds, albeit one-trick ponies.

Funny how that tends to happen.

It's like the Fighter can't accomplish the basic role of fighting well...

I know. But we have some new players joining our group the next sessino and my GM has tasked me with the fighter. (Which might change if any of them want to play fighterss.... with no nudging from me... wink wink).

But every time I try and create a fighter he tends to morph into a magic user.

Like i said...it can still be a Fighter. Ditch Half-Dragon if at all possible. It's not just the LA that's bad, it's the fact you aren't getting much out of the deal useful to combat / killing things efficiently. A Goliath for +1 LA to get +4 str, use large sized weapons, and have +4 on combat maneuver rolls like grapple and trip would be a much better deal, for example.

If being "draconic" is a campaign requirement, there are less painful ways to do it. Silverbrow Human. The +1 LA template, which I think is called "Draconic." And so on...

What books do you have access to and are allowed? I can help you make a Fighter without any spellcasting if you'd like. Or you could just play a warblade and be effective without all the work. Whatever you prefer.

Dragon disciple stinks. I would honestly take half-dragon template and 7 lvs in a class which actually does something over 10 lvs in a class that eventually grants me the half-dragon template. :erm:

I have access to msot of the books, it really comes down to what I can talk my DM into letting me use.

Would be easier only using PHB, DMG, MM, CWar, CAdv, CArc, CDiv as I use PCGen to create my characters adn they are the only books I have for it.

I have jjust rolled up a Dwarven Barb 1 / Fighter 5 and altough the AC is lower than my half dragon his HP are about double. He also gets two attacks and the first bonus is the same as the half dragon. I see what you were saying earlier Dandu.

Reading up on the Warblade at the moment and it does look very nice, might replace the fighter levels with it.

Your AB is +13. A level 6 fighter can reasonably be expected to have +13 AB from his BAB, weapon, and Strength before feats come into it.

Can I just ask, where does a level 6 fighter reasonably get +13 before feats? At level 6, my reading of the treasure rules doesn't assume most characters would have a +2 weapon yet, so the max I can work out is +12=+6 BAB +1 enhancement +5 Str (if it's a Str 20 half-orc). Minor magic items don't even come up much on the treasure tables by level 6, either, so are you assuming buying gauntlets of ogre power with left-over cash? But standard 4d6 stat rolling options and any other race would seem to wash that out. Does this just not make sense to me because I'm not used to optimization?

And to the OP: unless the rest of your group is really into CharOp, I wouldn't worry too much. As long as all the PCs are reasonably close to each other, the DM should gear challenges toward however strong your characters are.
