AE Mage Blade Class

I am interested in playing around with a fighter/spellcaster 20-level base class in my D&D game. I wasn't wowed by the duskblade from PHII or the spell thane in GR's Advanced Player's Manual. The other option seems to be the mage blade from Arcana Evolved.

Has anyone used this class in a D&D game, and if so, how did it play? Did you use the AE spell list as is, or did you develop your own using the D&D spell lists?

For a lot of reason I would prefer the latter option, as I just want the class and not the whole AE magic system, however cool it might be, in my regular D&D game.

I'm playing a Mage Blade at the moment in a D&D campaign and it's working out quite well, I think. We do use the AE spell list with AE classes, though and I think that really that's the key to the class' balance. The limiting factor with the Mage Blade is the access to only Simple Spells which have a power baseline below the standard D&D spells of equivelant level (IMO).

I don't think you can port the Mage Blade into the standard spell system without decreasing its spells known/spells per day or you risk unbalancing the class with regards the other base classes.

One "quick" fix might be to give the Mageblade the Bards spellcasting progression (spells known and spells per day) combined with the wizard/sorceror spell list. Maybe then add a few Cleric (buff) spells to the list (you need to remove the divine flavour, though). This will probably weaken the spellcasting capabilites a bit (or a lot), so don't be to shy in what buff spells you add. (Alternatively, you could compensate with a larger HD)

Otherwise, I think it would be the easiest if you just use the class as is. You will need the AE book anyway for class-specific questions, and so you will also have the spell list handy anyway.

I played a lvl 20 Mageblade in a straight D&D campaign. I used the AE spells and he was amazing eventhen. The spells are so rich and varied and different that he is still mentioned by others at the table as to how he was different.

You should still be able to buy AE in pdf too, which cuts the cost of acquiring the book for just one class. I do recommend using it with all the AE spells. Mageblades are a blast - versatile and skilled.

The mage blade would probably also work well with the Warmage, Hexblade, Spellthief or Bard spell lists, or perhaps using the Warlock's powers instead of spells.

One of the characters of our D&D/AE hybrid Seven Spires campaign is a Mage Blade 9/Mojh 3. It uses the AE spell list. In our campaign, spells for D&D classes are from D&D, spells for AE classes are from AE.

That's actually one of the best faring characters of the campaign.

Just to put the contrary view, I am playing a Mageblade ATM in a D&D game with D&D spells and it is working out fine, although in fairness my character is gestalt and multiclassed, so he has a lot of other things going on (and MAD like you wouldn't believe).

Bear in mind though, he faces a big restriction when using the core rules rather than AE in D&D has no concept of spells readied. That chart therefore, logically, becomes spells known, and the numbers on that chart are not very big!
