AEG Loses Stargate SG-1!!!

Also, entertaining a discussion on how soon they could or could not get started if they got the license is IMO another tell.

but, until its confirmed, its just wishful thinking.

but hey, it got me rereading my buffy and angel rpgs.

don't get me started on Angel and Buffy....its been almost 2 years since the last Buffy release, I know it is coming soon but really the wait has been bad. Of course Angel has only been about a year and a few months......

An observation that they can't have a confirmation. But they could deny it if it wasn't true, that leaves only one possibility.
1. Both parties are still negotiating the finer points of the agreement.
2. Eden is in the secretive Alpha stage of developing the game.

I speculate #1.

From Gaming Report:

Currenlty, we have only one new license for 2005 being announced this year for 3rd quarter release. That will be announced at GAMA... and it's not Stargate. Sorry. I know many of you want this but that is not the new property being developed at this time.

IF Eden was to get the Stargate license we couldn't do anything with it for a while. We have a lot on our plate this year and AEG put out a good product that is still in the distribution chain.

Also... no "poaching" was involved. No matter how much the fans of the internet want to believe this. All im saying is we placed a proposal in two years ago and MGM granted the license to AEG. In August they asked for a renewed proposal. We submitted a new one. Since then we got an answer back from MGM on our proposal. At this time I cannot comment on the details. I will say its very positive but like I said above... we have alot on our plate allready for 2005.

If anyone else has picked up the Stargate license. The following things are likely to be true.

1) It won't use AEG's system (even though it could thanks to D20), because it would just help the sale of AEG's books, and you need people to buy new core books as that's where the majority of the sales come from. And as Eden have pointed out, as long as AEG's is available to buy you are going to be in competition.

2) It will split the Stargate players market so you'll likely not make anywhere near the sales AEG made of the core book, as a number of AEG players won't switch. Your likely customers are folks that have a real hate of D20, so didn't get AEG's game (even though it was an amazing core book, so much so the SG writers now use it as a reference). So if diaglo is a Stargate fan, you might as well just print one copy. :heh:

3) It would have to be really, really amazing, to beat AEG's stuff produced so far. Heck you might be better off doing Stargate: Atlantis, since AEG has pretty much published everything you need to play in the SG-1 setting.

Well, that's why the y aren't going to release anything or do anything for at least a year. I'm curtrently reviewing all of the AEG books and they are freaking fantastic. Eden does a good job, but I'm not sure they can do as well as AEG. Buffy and Angel where good reads and fun books but they were not as filled with information as the AEG books are.

I agree, it won't be d20. They will start at from scratch and do books ignoring what AEG did I imagine.

I dunno. Can Stargate run under the ODnD ruleset? ;)

I don't think it has to be amazing if they want to attract anti-d20 gamers with a non-d20/SRD game, just cater to their own customer pool (the ones playing Buffy and Angel). :p

Jinkies, thanks. I know all of my fellow Stargate writers would be tickled to hear you say that.

adding my own speculations in...

agree they will not make it d20 in all likelihood. i would be shocked if it wasn't simply a strong set of source material and somethintg akin to the same cinematic unisystem they used to model angel and buffy, tailored to the setting as they usually do. i haven't seen their scifi unisystem games, but it might not be too far off.

Actually, for the material AEG already covered, my bet is the market will be most of the same people as bought the AEg game. The only bleed offs i would expect are those who are/were diehard aeg/spycraft fans.

As one who did not like the mechnics aeg chose, but loved the source material, I knw i will be a buyer.

For material beyond that AEg has done, season three and beyond, I think the market is wide open.

I disagree. While the source material aeg produced was great, not everyone agrees their mechanics treatment was, and thats even among d20 fans like me.

heck, i go even further... they produced great source material. they producd great mechanics, i often recommend stargate as the best modern combat d20 rpg system. They just IMO did not choose a good match between source and mechanics. They got what i call "stargate as if done by tom clancey or larry bond." they probably produced an excellent "military scifi toolkit" for their overall spycraft game line.

Expecting a unisystem version mechanics wise to focus more on character and less on hardware and military style combat, i an hopeful of seeing a better fit between mechanics and gameplay and show and feel.

But, i do hope Eden continues the high quality and amount of good show-based source material AEG has shown.

it would be a shame if they lost that.

heck, they could certainly do worse than buying the services of as many of the source material side authors from the AEG stargate line to write their own stargate source.

Though, just as my own personal preference, please not the nazi world uber-cliche stuff!!!
;-)
Maybe they won't be able to do the nazi world stuff cuz its AEG's ip?!?
