AEG's Empires

I was wondering if anyone had picked this product up.

As I understand, Mike Mearls was the lead designer. He is one of my favorite game designers.

If you have picked this product up, what do you like/dislike and why?

Thanks!

I really like Mr. Mearls' work as well, though I was a bit disappointed by his Aerial Adventures series.

I've since vowed to be more careful in my purchasing, and so am eager to read some reviews on Empire.

I'll be taking a look at it today, after I get off work...

I had a chance to read through Empire a few nights ago, and it's now on my "Books Yo Mama Gonna Cry if You Don't Buy" list.

It's got a simple, detailed, and fun realm management system, nice mass battle rules, and loads of good advice. It'll work perfectly with Dynasties & Demagogues and Magical Medieval Society, and if you combine those three books you've got some SERIOUS kung fu happening.

If you and your players want to manage kingdoms, this book is a must-have. Go ye, sell some plasma if you have to, and buy it.

Devil Vrylakos (on left shoulder): "But wait, isn't that Aylott having Mr Mearls over for tea and crumpets at his store? He must be on Mearls' payroll! Don't listen to him!"

Angel Vrylakos (right shoulder):" But Mr Aylott *did* write Dynasties and Demagogues, and he *did* send that nice erratta sticker to you, and he seems ever so forthright. He must be speaking from his heart when he says Empire is good!"

Vrylakos Master Control (inside skull): "It's payday. You're an obsessive game buyer. Do the math."

*cough* Right... guess I'll go take a look in a bit and... uhm... probably crack like an egg and buy it.

I'll chime in and agree with spacecrime; I picked this thing up for some help with world building, and turns out I got much more than I paid for.

The way the book is set up, you can use it to work out the smallest barony in the back woods and how well it functions (economically speaking), or use it to manage world spanning empires (as the name suggests) that require a huge beaurocracy to run.

They provide a remarkable NPC class designed to help you in this capacity; where the Aristocrat was born to wealth, and learns to manage it, the Noble was born to lead people, so his abilities reflect his dependance on CHA related skills. Note: this means you can have very poor blue-blooded nobles, as was common in the rennasance and post-renn period. Brilliant thought and design.

They also have quite a bit on mass combat, but as I am more interested in the set up of governments, I have not yet perused that section. I will leave a review of that section to someone else.

Vrylakos: all the voices in your head are right. :) (Well, not about the payroll part. But that's just because Mike can't meet my unrealistic demands for bags of gold.)

I assure you that I'm acting entirely in my own self-interest. Fortunately, my self-interest is best served by encouraging people to buy books I like.

cheers,

Chris Aylott

Ok, Mearls owes you a soda. Consider it Dyn&Dema crosspollination... Must buy...

Hmmm, sounds pretty good.

I was sort of wary about this, because a lot of AEG one word title books are nothing more than a grab bag of stuff vaguely related to that title.
