Okay folks- the paint jobs will never be as good as if you did them yourself. Why? We paint for the love of it. We place in the minut details that make them "special". The painted figures you buy.... some poor guy has to paint a few dozen every hour as quickly as possible. Generally in an assembly line mode- four colors- four painters.

Appreciate the figures for what they are. Nothing is keeping you from repainting them.

The issue isn't that a collector/hobbyist could do a better job, but that recent DDM minis are generally noticeably worse than similar DDM minis from two or three years ago. Specific exceptions abound, (and of course, even the best sets had some duds), but since Night Below, the number of "dud" sculpts and paint-jobs per set has been consistently overtaking the number of awesome ones in each set.

Now for the new set choices-

There are some figures I will defiantly want but after 15 sets I am at the stage of not needing certain creatures. But for new players, these creatures are a welcomed addition. I even want the fire giant. He looks like a good general for the 6-7 normal fire giants I have. Its not War of the Dragon Queen which was frankly a great set but its still good.

There are definitely some figures I want, too. (I like the new 4E-style angels. I like the look of that Adamantine Dragon.)

...But I find myself wondering, "Why the pastel colours? Why so darkwash? (This is most noticeable on things like horns, teeth, and white-colour gear.) Why doesn't the Yuan-ti Anathema have fangs? Why is the blade of the Death Titan's axe attached to some kind of flimsy cable instead of an actual handle? Why does the Hellwasp look like it's made of marshmallow? Why is primer being used as a colour? (Death Titan, again; Deathjump Spider was bad like that, too.)" And this roper's mouth kinda looks like an anus....

I want to support DDM, but I'm frustated by the obvious drop in production quality. I won't recommend DDM products to anyone ever again if sculpt and painting quality stays at the same level it's at now.

Haven't we heard that the game is not based on the RPG aspect being it's main support but rather people playing the mini game itself?

If so, that line of thinking would be incorrect no?

Me? I think that's dead on but at the same time may throw people into other game lines. No point paying for a plastic mini the same you can for a metal one for some.

There is a substantial community. Not M:tG-substantial, mind you, but big enough, I suppose. DDM players crawl outta the woodwork for tournament events/promo goods.

Even with a substantial community of DDM players, I still think the vast majority of the DDM sales go to D&D players.

Honestly? I suppose it's possible, but I think you've got it backwards.

OTOH, I have no proof, so we may never know for certain...

What are some good companies that sell miniatures that are good alternatives with generic figues specifically for D&D?

I'd have to disagree on that last part. The sales distribution model leads to the secondary market in which the common minis, at least, are very, very cheap.
