Age of Conan

so the only downside is Conan himself. I wish he did more then pick up chips and lay down raid tokens. I hope they expand his role in the expansion (I feel sure they will do one

Has anyone played the War of the Rings game. Is it basically a more complex version of conan (with two players)? I looked over the rules at the FFG site and it looks quite different.

I've played a lot of the War of the Rings game. It's absolutely brilliant and a lot of fun, but I haven't played Conan yet so I can't compare them.

OK, you put the two of us together (I have Conan but not WOTR) and we can compare. I read the online rules for WotR and I think the only thing that the two games have in common is the use of action die. These dice control what type of actions you can take. But even action dice are a bit different in Age of Conan then WotR, the player who is in control of Conan rolls the die and all the players (up to four) use the same die. I gather in WotR there are shadow die and free people action die. Thus in Age of Conan, I could use the last military die leaving you with only crown and intrigue die. Thus you couldn't use your military until we reroll the action dice. (I hope I am being clear)

I gather it is next to imposable for the free people to win militarily and the best that they can do is stalemate the shadow player until the fellowship destroys the ring-in keeping with the book (Correct?)


I think War of the Rings will be my next big gaming purchase. Would you get the expansion too or is that overkill and I should buy another game? So many games, so little time and money

Yes, that's quite different. In WotR, both players roll separate sets of dice - the Shadow Player almost always has more! - and then alternate turns selecting actions from those they've rolled.

Pretty much. The Free Peoples can get a military victory, but it's very hard indeed, especially as Sauron has an unlimited supply of troops and the FP doesn't!

Where it can happen is when Sauron hits too hard early... because the FP has been getting Frodo closer to the Crack of Doom. Yeah, it really captures the book well.

The expansion for WotR is really, really worth it. Not only does it fix a few things in WotR - and having figures for the Balrog and Galadriel is really nice - but it also includes two extra games in it! One is the Siege of Helm's Deep, the other the Siege of Minas Tirith.

I wouldn't play a game of WotR these days without using the expansion. You probably wouldn't use it for your first couple of games, but it's worth it after that.
