That's Latin for "cool"
So if you've been following my posts with religous zeal, you know that I had to drive from Houston, Texas to DC in a moving van along with another gamer.
We ended up playing the first Age of Worms module with the Iron Heroes rules. All rules pertaining to position and mapping were cheerfully ignored and my buddy built his character ignoring those rules. He made a third level Executioner which did pretty well for the combat part of the module, though I had to handwave the plot development because that revolve around Knowledge skills he didn't have.
We did dice rolling by picking random numbers (usually exit signs or mile markers), adding them together, dividing by the "die" number, and taking the remainder as a result. It kinda-sorta worked. I fudged a couple of random numbers when it would have resulted in death for the character.
SPOILERS for Age of Worms:
He liked the first part of the adventure best. We both felt the final encounter with the Wind Warrior guys was too tough, even for a full 1st level party. The puzzle was pretty easy for him to solve and he avoided the room with all the bugs. There were a few traps that would have been deadly for a 1st level party, but his character had 29 hit points so he was able to survive most of them. By the time he ended up at the final encounter, he had used up his entire reserve from the Iron Heroes rules, but had full hit points.
However ... in the process of figuring out the puzzle and determining where the missing lanterns were, my buddy stopped paying attention to the gas. The U-haul truck we were in had the gas dial move from left to right, unlike most cars where it goes from right to left. So when he glanced down, he didn't really pay attention and thought we had plenty of gas. Sure enough, while he was underwater fighting a ghoul, we ran out of gas outside of Jackson! Very embarassing. To make matters worse, he got a critical hit, which doesn't count on undead.
We ran on fumes to the gas station. We drifted a lot and got lucky on red lights. So we didn't have to walk anywhere to fill up. Good thing too, because we were using mile markers as "seed" values for random numbers and we'd have ended up getting the same results for the rest of the adventure.
Anyway, the rest of the adventure stumbled a bit. He didn't think to explore the farmhouse so I had to railroad him through to the point where he got to the observatory. We both liked the encounters at the observatory. I would reccomened animating the zombies at the dinner table if the PCs simply get close to them. Neither of us thought sitting down at the head seat was particularly intuitive and the encounter is just too cool to miss. I had to fudge the observatory fights because they hinged on multiple opponents which would have been a nightmare to conceptualize on road. I gave the base monster a "level" (+5hp, +1 attack and damage, +1 saves) for every similar monster that I ignored. He cut through them, but by then he had leveled up to 4th and was dual weilding, so he was going to do that anyway. The encounter with Flinge was a bit of a waste. My buddy wasn't really paying attention to the necromancer, so he didn't catch the description of the injections. I also had to give him all the information you can get from Flinge because we weren't exactly roleplaying.
All in all, a good adventure and the people at the gas station were very friendly.
