Aid Another and Grappling?

Grapple or an attack roll, it is still melee combat.

Strictly, actually, it isn't.

From the Combat section:
"If you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action."

"Two characters are engaged in melee if they are enemies of each other and either threatens the other."

"No Threatened Squares: You don’t threaten any squares while grappling."

So... if you're grappling, you don't threaten any squares.

If neither of you threatens the other, you're not engaged in melee.

If you're not 'an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat', someone can't attempt to aid that friend.

Coupled with the fact that up to 8 small size critters can attack a medium size critter, this will make a great houserule.
