Airships with planar drive [Planejammer?]

JPL

Adventurer
Last night I was thumbing through "Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon" and I thought...I've always wanted to do some kind of Burroughsian space opera.

Today, I notice Bastion Press's Airships.

And my thought is...one of those smart guys from Halruua finally takes the airship to the next level and installs a planejammer. Swashbuckling high adventure across infinite new worlds ensues.

My question: has this been done already?

Basically, this was 2nd Ed. Spelljammer. Crystal Spheres, anyone? :)

But with the Vehicle Rules from Dragon #294/A&EG come planar sails and air keels, so....

Hoo-hah! I have that Dragon. I can go home and look that up.

I'm thinking that the planejammer either takes you directly from plane to plane (like a portal), or that the ship has to cross through the Astral Plane to get from place to place.

Thats pretty much what I'm planning on doing too. I want my campaign to be focused on the material plane but still have interplanetary travel. The navigator makes a Knowledge: Astrography check. The DC depends on how far away the target planet is. The planar sails create a temporary conduit through the astral which translocates the ship. How close they get depends on the navigators check.

Or you could drop in at The Cosmonomicon forum here at ENWorld. We're building a set of rules for aero-spatial travel, including spelljamming and all that good stuff.

It's not complete yet, and work proceeds slowly, but there's enough there to get you thinking. Check it out!

Sounds a lot like what we're using in my current game. The ships function much like regular airships, but have basically a hover/mini-jet engine powered by a big crystal, and can jump between the planes whenever required. Very useful if you're fleeing from huge amounts of evil dudes who suddenly take over the world with no explanation.

See "Rogue Mistress" for the old Elric! RPG by Chaosium.

The Rogue Mistress is a planar travelling galleon. It's a campaign book with several scenarios, ranging from fantasy to post-apocalypse to science fiction to elizibethan England (sort of. An alternate one).

It's a bit too rail-roady for my taste, but it's pretty neat, all in all. And it's easy to convert to d20, as it's done in BRP, which is 70% like d20. (I wouldn't recomment trying it in BRP, as it's very very deadly. I lost almost the entire party in the first scenarios, and the rest in the second.)
