I use this homebrew system in my games. Main rules:
1. Anyone with Wisdom or Intellegence over 14 gains "Alchemy" feat.
Alchemy
Prerequisites: Wis or Int > 14
Benefit: You can brew potions and poisons with difficulty level not exceeding your Int/Wis modifier.
Special: You gain this feet automatically when you meet prerequisites.
2. To brew potion or poison, you need bottle, water(or other liquid, if it's stated) and components. You can brew without recipes. Usually, it takes 30-300 minutes - depends on potion.
3. Each component has following traits:
Keywords - main part of the system. Component's keywords state what it is doing. For example, "Healing - weak" or ''Restore - medium''. If you are brewing potion from component with first keyword, it heals 10 hp when it's drunk. If you brew potion from both components, it restores encounter healing power. PC can be not aware of components keywords - DM always does. Sometimes, components don't match, for example, one with ''movement - fast'' and other with ''Diplomacy - good". Usually, potion is brewed from compo nent with some action keyword(''Increase", "Spoil", e.t.c...) and from component with other keyword(''Magic","Wisdom'', e.t.c...). You can make potion from 1-4 components, not counting bottle and water.
Difficulty - trait that show level of knowledge needed to work with it. As yoy already read, ''You can brew potions and poisons with difficulty level not exceeding your Int/Wis modifier.'' Varies from 1 to 10.
Rarity - how rare component is. Can be "common(c)", "uncommon(uc)", "rare(r)", ''extremely rare(er)'' and ''unical(u!)''.
Brewing time - how much time you need to prepair, boil or cleant component. Varies from +5m to +6h.
Price - standart price in gp.
If you are intrested, i can also post components i'm using.
