Spoilers Alien: Earth Spoiler Thread

I have ... mixed emotions about this episode.

I have to admit- I felt a little let down. I watch most shows via binging nowadays (I know, my bad), so I was hoping for more of a finale. And ... this episode did provide some closure on certain thematic elements to the season (and character arcs), but also?

It also felt like the episode... moved the chess pieces around for season 2. Which is fine but not what I was hoping for? I expected bolder choices- I wanted the chess board to be kicked over with the pieces scattered (and many lost forever). Instead, it's, "Huh. I wonder how the changed dynamics of these characters will play out next year ... or, more likely, in two or three years, given the vagaries of modern shows."

With that said, I think that the episode was very successful in delivering a lot of payoff and avoiding the dreaded "mystery box" curse. Observations-

1. I liked the Boy Genius / Daddy Synth payoff. Well done, and makes prior scenes even more resonant.

2. While I loved the "serial killer" and horror aspect of the Xeno, and I was willing to suspend my disbelief for most of it (Inverse Law of Ninjas), they really need to develop a little consistency about how powerful it is as opposed to being a plot contrivance? In one scene, Wendy's Doggy ..., um, the Xeno is chased off from killing Dame by a few soldiers it wasn't aware of. In other scenes, it easily kills several soldiers with guns drawn and firing pointing at it.

3. Kirsh is the spice that makes A:E Stew taste better. Could have used more Kirsh. Still, loved that he and Morrow finally threw down. But ... we still do not know what is driving Kirsh. Where is the wriggle room in his programming? I'm guessing that S2 will explore this further.

4. Oh, Hermit. I think that the very last scene, for him, was the equivalent of Wendy finding the grave.

5. My biggest random question- do you think S2E1 will start with WY landing on the island and what happens, or will it be "three months later"?

Finally, I started my series of posts here (I think) by talking about how I thought that Hawley wouldn't be taking on "Alien" per se, but instead would be riffing on Ridley Scott and his recurrent themes as explored through, inter alia, Blade Runner and Alien and their progeny.

Two of those themes that Scott likes to return to are:
1) What does it mean to be human?
2) Why does humanity keep endeavoring to find ways to end itself? (And as a corollary, what lies do we tell ourselves to justify it?)

Let's call these the "self-reflective" and "self-destructive" themes. So .... I think A:E has done a masterful job at exploring them on both the micro- and macro- level.

PS- Octo-eye 4EVA! We all know who the real star of the show is. Boy Genius might want you to talk, but you can just keep on keepin' on.

One thing that is interesting about BK in these end confrontations. While he is clearly still scared at least at a primal level....he is also excited and intrigued at the same time. I think there is a part of him that is just so terribly bored by life, that this life and death situation is the "most fun he's had in a long time".

He also seems genuinely curious on how Wendy's takeover is going to play out, he might even be rooting for her in a weird way. Afterall, if his notion earlier in the show was true that he wants to finally talk to someone smarter than himself....he may want to see how far Wendy will take this, see if she really becomes that superior being he has always wanted to meet.

(and is still alive apparently because trained security guys can't actually shoot anything...even he's it just hanging from the ceiling killing one of your friends).
They weren't missing it. The thing was impervious to gunfire.

There was a scene earlier in the series where they talked about how they tried to pry it open and failed.

But what about the mold cleaning? The mystery remains. Was the cleaner close to the elevator before the security team boarded it?
I definitely felt like the cleaner's cameo in that scene was very deliberate. By that time, we as the audience know that all non-essential personnel had supposedly been evacuated, leaving all of the principal characters, the security forces, and... the mold cleaner.

10 internets says the mold cleaner has a spray that will turn out to be the only effective weapon against Impervious Plant Bat.

I'm with Snarf on the mixed feelings. I was hoping for more character plot lines (and characters) reaching conclusions but this definitely set up the pieces for Season 2. I am left wondering about Kirsh. Did he get blind-sided completely or is this something he thought could potentially happen. Until we know more about his agenda, I am still in the dark about that.

I thought the title, "The Real Monsters" was clever given the twist with the hybrids. Instead of reading it as, "Oh the humans are the real monsters" as opposed to the horrors they've brought back from deep space, I think it can also be interpreted that now unleashed and angry at everyone, the hybrids themselves may be the real monsters. As someone upthread mentioned, Hermit is definitely realizing more and more that Wendy/Marcy/whomever she has become now, is not his sister and is getting more dangerous as time goes on.

Given that "Yutani the Younger" (I think that is what Morrow called her?) is on one of the troop transports, I would guess/hope that the second season picks up almost immediately.

Next to the Kirsh show, I'm also excited to see what hijinks Zombie Arthur and Eyeleen get up to.

Speaking of Eyeleen, she must be made out of rubber. A couple of human powered kicks to the eyeball would be devastating enough. A hybrid treating you like a hacky sack though? Ouch.

I'm going to hazard a guess we're going to find out how some of the non-xenomorph species reproduce in season 2.

impervious Plant Bat.
Didn't it look suspiciously like a darkmantle!

I'm going to hazard a guess we're going to find out how some of the non-xenomorph species reproduce in season 2.
If this thing is plant-like, maybe the mold is how this thing reproduces? It's basically the mushroom to the mold.
