Alignment Contriversy

First Post
I am somewhat confused on what align. my elf ranger should be. I put NG for now but I'm not sure if thats appropriate. I've taken all the test I could find and gotten LG, NG, and CG.
So if anyone has some good links, advice, or questions of your own, please assist.
Thanks,
Raw

WEll, if you got all three goods on your "tests", I'd say NG would be appropriate (since it's "middle of the road" good).

More to the point, alignment means nothing if your GM doesn't really enforce it. I've seen PCs act chaotic evil, with a chaotic good on their character sheets. Ask your GM if alignment really matters before you worry about it too much.

Do what I do - play your character as a person and leave the alignment field blank. After about 5 to 10 sessions ask your DM what alignment he should be, and tell him if it changes to let you know.

That way you don't have to worry about it, you have a built in plot hook should your character become dynamic and change as you play him, and there's no huff or fuss over interpretations. You'll have to show DM trust - but that's never been a bad thing to show in any good game.

I'd just talk to the GM, say, "I'm not sure this is right, but I'm putting it down as NG, would you please let me know if I'm acting closer to a different alignment?" Even the most hard-nosed GM should give you some slack. [edit: yeah, what Clueless said! lol ]

More importantly, when you took those quizzes, were you answering as you? Or how you think your character might have responded. Try to remember that your character doesn't have to be you with studded leather. It's an opportunity to create a whole new personality. Embrace it! :)

Well, I answered the quizes correctly dave and alignment does matter cause we have alot of organizations in the game. My PC's church is ehlonna but he also likes the church of heironieus,
guards of the green and disiples of legend (all in CC)but he does'nt want conflicting loyalties or some of their xtremist veiws. The GM belives strongly that I should be NG ,but he is also very prejudiced: LG= insensitive and stupid CG= "I wont obey you out of spite". I've tried persuading him to be more open minded but to little effect.

It sounds like your GM is trouble.

Big problem with alignment is that it means different things to different people. the best thing you can do is talk to your group about what alignments mean to them (not 'which is the best alignment' but what each alignment represents) and work from that.

My 10c worth on the 'good' alignments:

Lawful Good: You believe that a society with codified laws serves the people. You believe that such laws represent true Justice. If a person or society doesn't uphold the Law and behave in a Just manner, they must be deposed, arrested, tried and punished according to the Law. If the Laws do not serve the people they protect, then they must be changed, legally, so they do so. Duty and Honor must always be observed in any action you undertake.

Neutral Good: What is the most efficient and convenient solution to this problem? Evil exists and it must be fought. It doesn't matter how, just as long as it's done quickly to minimize the damage. The point to life is giving, lifting everyone around you up to a higher state of being. Charity is the gift of life. Laws should serve the people, but often they don't. Unjust laws should be ignored or abolished. Spontinaity is also good in moderation, too much chaos breeds evil, however.

Chaotic Good: Laws don't serve the people, they serve the people in power. Law inhibits the ability to do good by placing restrictions on when, how and where doing the right thing is appropriate. Doing the right thing should always be appropriate, no matter the circumstance. Of course, one must be intelligent and cunning in promoting good because evil is insidious. Evil can use and abuse the Law to its own benefit. The only true way to fight evil is to ignore the Law and terminate it by whatever means necessary. Once identified, evil can thus be swiftly destroyed without relying on the courts and legalities that evil flaunts so effectively.
