I like mysteries, sue me. The rules don't support it, so I changed em. Problem solved.

I 100% advocate changing the rules to suit mysteries better.

It is, however, a mistake to say that the rules don't support mysteries as it is, because of alignment or discern lies.

IMC, evil exists, but you don't punish people or find people guilty just for being evil. Rather, evil can be useful at times. And 90% of humanity is probably Neutral, anyhow.

So evil or good or neutral or lawful or chaotic, there's still a mystery. Not everyone pings "good" except the villain. Most people are not "good." So that's unreliable at best. And just because you know someone's lying doesn't mean you know what the truth *is*.

In other words, the current rules deal with mystery just fine. Changing them is good if you plan on doing a lot of it, but it's hardly nessecary.

So true (no pun intended). Just because someone believes something doesn't make it true. For example, there is much evidence on mistaken perceptions, such as mistaken witness identification. Can a person be trained or maybe through a magic spell "Tell Lie" beat the detect lie spell. For example, can a person believe, at least in there concious mind for a time, that whatever they say is true to beat these spells; something similar to how people can beat polygraphs.

One might also postlate what is a lie? Is a half truth a lie? A good attorney can get around this by focusing things on yes or no questions. It's just like a deposition except with a magical gaurantee of truthieness.

In the end, a quite intricate mystery could be fashioned. The bad guys not relying so much on lack of information but the planting of misleading "truth" or so IMHO.
