All editions of D&D: What do you like?

I don't miss anything. Its why I play C&C, it allows me to pull together everything I like/love of each edition of D&D, easily. From the old wood boxed sets all the way up to 4E.

My favorite thing is having henchman, followers, and retainers, and keeping them alive, fed, and equipped. I also enjoy building keeps and expanding them into full and glorious castles. Plus developing lands and recruiting peasants and the skilled craftsmen I need to make my piece of land function and profitable.

I then like to overthrow the overly tyrannical and greedy lord that has been oppressing my people from his ever increasing taxes and demands.

Classes - If someone asks what I'm playing and I say, "Ranger", they have a quick idea of what I mean. Other games, even class-based non-D&D, find it hard to relate as easily.

Sneak Attack! Be it backstab, against humanoids only, or the rogue's go-to ability, nothing says screwed more than realizing the fighter in front isn't as scary as the rogue in back.

Dragons Dragons Dragons - in no other game do I find them equally familiar and mystical as I do between the pages of a Monster Manual.

Vampires - in some games, they're prim and proper, goth and brooding, or ravenous. In D&D, they are fear-inducing beasts of party killing power that makes even Bram Stoker raise an eyebrow.

Beholders - nuff said.

Ktulu

Wizards and magic, in general.

And the sense of wonder. That's faded over the years but it's still a pretty amazing set of ideas that they produced.

The creative process (as a DM)

The DM-player synergi.

The fun and laughter.

Kicking down doors, killing monsters and taking their bling-bling.

I love all the D&D axioms and cliches that will transcend editions:

Go to a town. Head straight for the bar, get drunk and start a fight before the DM can introduce the plot.

Searching for secret doors until you find one.

Outrageously elaborate plans that don't survive the initiative roll.

Kobolds.

10' poles.

"Just don't roll a 1,"

But as a DM, the thing I lament going missing is 1e Energy Drain.

- the dice, and the odd things they're kept in
- green slime
- maps, drawing them both as a DM, and as the designated player mapper
- selecting spells at level up
- malevolent fungus
- electrum pieces (oh, wait...)
