Alternate idea for turning undead?

I'd think it would work according to a variable levels of failure mechanic. That is, if the undead fails it's save, it's turned. But if it fails by a lot (say, 10 points?), it's destroyed or commanded. I really dig the idea of adding gradations of success and failure to d20 rolls, and this would be a perfect place for it.
