Hmm, in one of my former campaigns (same one that we had two guys in a rowboat sink a troop ship with nothing but bows), we had a unique name for fireball. "Flaming Death!" a la A Bug's Life. It started as a joke and just took on a life of his own. So whenever our warmage wanted to cast it, he had to call that out.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure about the quality of the Latin translations.

I usually incorporate the name of the spell (or a variation of ) into the casting verbal components. That gives it a natural feel

ex:
rather than just saying, "I cast come of cold" I'd say, "the chill of ice is spread in a cold cone of winter..."

or a fiery blast engulfs him.

or a bolt of lightning extends from my fingertips...

and i usually say it differently each time- but the DM likes my creativity and usually knows what i am talking about...
