Alternative Epic Rules

What are your thoughts on the epic levels? The Epic Level Handbook gets mixed to poor reviews.

Who has GM'ed (or played) epic levels? Have you tried any other rules besides WotC's?

...or, any epic level gaming advice for a DM who has never run past level 20.

Molto Grazie!

Aside from my own website and material (Immortals Handbook) the link to which is in my sig. you could also check out the dicefreaks forums where a lot of great epic material is floating around.

The High Level rules aren't bad, just boring like the low level ones. The numbers just seem to get bigger. I've used those from the ELH and the ones Sword and Srocery put out. Both are okay.

Trust me, Upper Krust's rules are not boring or just like the low level ones at all, nor is the flavor. You'll not see any "Here's a city of epic level guys! It's just like any regular town, but the bartenders have 25 hit dice!" In fact, his epic campaign suggestions and plot hooks are so epic and awesome they've been known to blow people's mind. Psuedonatural Devestation Vermin wrapping the planet in a crystal cocoon, an ancient living sword used as the key to seal away an elder god, guardians of a paragon who must be slain in order to commit genocide, a world becoming sentient... and things get better from there.

I'll second both of Upper_Krust's suggestions. They're well worth the time (and, in the case of the Immortal's Handbook, small amount of money) to check out.

Maybe I'm just being clueless, but I can't figure out the starting point for Krusty's stuff. What's the basic book/ruleset?

Immortal's Handbook: Epic Bestiary, I guess. Well, that's what I started with (after picking up the much smaller pdf detailing his CR/EL method).

It's not a complete system ATM, unfortunatly - there's a monster book and a WIP character creation book, with other stuff like a book o magic etc all lined up for some point in the future.

So, amazing as it will be, at this stage unless you're Upper_Krust playing with it involves a certain amount of improv. ;-)

Bear in mind that U_K doesn't completely rewrite the entire epic system. The basics (epic progression, epic spells, etc.) are all the same as the ELH. Rather, he redoes some stuff (particularly the divine rules, making them much more PC-friendly) and expands others (such as monster size categories).

And to echo everyone else, his work ROCKS!
