alternative "minis" for DnD

Hey there.

For at while now i have been thinking about getting some sort of miniatures for our weekly DnD game. So far we have gotten away with some old warhammer fantasy figures. But the thing is i am not too keen on the official DnD minis. The reason being mainly the pricetag for some random miniature. I dont wanna collect to get the pieces i need. i want minis to illustrate our battlefield.

So to get to the actual question. Are there some sort of alternative minis people use or some other marking utility. I thought about the alea tools mentioned in the latest Dungeon article as they would get the job done. But using them as the only marker it would take awy the feeling of the battlefield if its filled with shiny collors.

So do you guys know any alternative that are more realliable and cheaper than the official mini treasurehunting packs.

flipmat + any type of marker. Well, it is cheaper! And it works. ;)

I actually have some minis, but sometimes can't be bothered using them. I certainly don't (and can't) have one or more of "everything", so minis - of any kind - have never struck me as ideal. Randomised lots, even less so than otherwise.

Don't know of much 'in between' that would be worth the hassle/cost/whatever. However, quite a few gamers apparently use creature counters (images on cardstock.) Could be a place to look.

w00t! I made it to level 3.5! That's cute, considering. :p

Try and find HeroQuest ;). You get awesome boardgame and a bunch of nice minis:
4 skeletons
8 orcs
8 goblins
4 Evil Warriors
2 BBEGs (gargoyle and chaos-sorc)
4 Heroes (Barbarian, elf, mage and dwarf)
+ some others.

The catch? Trying to find the game in good condition with reasonable price

Here's pictures of some of those minis. http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?p=4074812

I second that. If you buy D&D minis online as singles, instead of buying boosters, you get the best of both worlds - dirt cheap minis and a non-random selection. This is especially true if you stick to commons and uncommons.

Check ebay, but watch for shipping charges. There are a few sellers out there that have flat shipping rates (fixed no matter how much you buy); they're the best for larger minis purchases. I've bought literally hundreds of minis at a time with a grand total of $4 in shippings from Auggies (an ebay seller) before.

M&M's

you can buy a bagful at the local grocery store for like $2. and it includes around 200 minis.

plus after you kill them you can eat them.

better than EXP.

edit: besides the fact they are better looking than the DDM ones.
