Alternative system for XP loss

I've come up with an alternative system for how much XP a character loses when he's brought back from the dead. Rather than losing a level and having his XP total set to halfway between his new level and the old, a dead character is charged a fixed amount of XP that usually is enough to drop him one level, but never enough to drop him two.

Old Level - Penalty
  1. 1 point of truly permanent Constitution damage
  2. 1,000 XP
  3. 2,000 XP
  4. 3,000 XP
  5. 4,000 XP
  6. 5,000 XP
  7. 6,000 XP
  8. 7,000 XP
  9. 8,000 XP
  10. 9,000 XP
  11. 10,000 XP
  12. 11,000 XP
  13. 12,000 XP
  14. 13,000 XP
  15. 14,000 XP
  16. 15,000 XP
  17. 16,000 XP
  18. 17,000 XP
  19. 18,000 XP
  20. 19,000 XP
[/list=1]A person with a minimum of mathematical knowledge should be able to figure out what formula I used to create the table. :)

Looks like a good system, I'll probably be using something like that myself when I get back to running again. :)

Differentiation comes to the rescue again. :D

Makes sense. Now it somewhat retains the progress you had. I hadn't thought about this before, but now that you posted this this change seems entirely logical to me.

*idea shamelessly taken for use in next campaign :D*

I use the same thing in my campaign; it seemed unfair for a character who nearly gained a level loses more XP than a character who just gained a level.

Geoff.
