Alternatives to WotC Minis

Would you buy non-randomized pre-painted plastic miniatures for use with D&D?

I would love to use minis. I've kept out of the D&D ones because of the randomness - other than that, they're very attractive, because I don't have the space, time, talent, or patience to paint minis.

The plastic minis are great for a gamer like me - not just price, but also no time investment, easy to store and transport (throw them in a box - don't need special foam liners and all that jazz, plus they're light).

So, if they're roughly comparable in price to the D&D minis, I'd be sorely tempted to pick them up (depending of course on my cashflow).

When I was a wee lad, I had a set of knights with removable plastic weapons. I've got no idea how feasible something like that would be, but it would certainly answer to the folks who want their minis more customizable.

I haven't bought a miniature for myself in about a decade. I don't have the room for them.

I would be interested in a set of appropriately sized electronic counters that I could print out or use as pictures in an e-mail game or call up on a laptop.

A set of counters for your Denizens monsters would be great, perhaps bundled with the smaller electronic files you are creating for over at rpgnow.

If the minis looked good and heck, came in themed packs, I'd have no problem with them, as long as we realize that this is catering to the monster crowd, not the player crowd. Player's have numerous lines for their characters including Iron Wind and Reaper, while GMs have to spend through the nose for the monsters.

Make it more like Yugi-O or something where monsters are much more common than human and demi-human characters of any kind, and we're all good.

The justification WotC gave for randomization was along the lines of reducing unique sku numbers to assist gaming stores with ordering and lowering the risk of excess/left over products of sets that do not sell well.

Are you thinking of using a standard distribution method or something unique? (Or would that be telling? :) )

Their plasttics are the best on the market today, and no one can touch them. Although I must say the new multipart minis for Starship Troopers by Mongoose are looking really cool. Here's a link.

Here's another one ... Bob Naismith is of course ex-GW, as is the ST games designer Andy Chambers. As for that matter is (I think) Mike McVey of Warmachine fame.

If you can sell generic monsters or NPCs at a reasonable price I will buy some to replace the hodge-podge of placemarkers I use now.

I would be happy to see large packs (20 + pieces) of monsters like skeletons, zombies, orcs kobolds, etc. And smaller packs (5 - 10) of more specialised groups. For example, 10 guards, or 10 peasants or 10 dwarves or 10 clerics.

I have bookmarked your web-site so I can watch your progress!

The other thing, btw, that WotC or some other enterprising group ought to do is release some plastic non-combatant NPCs - these are few and far between right now in the WotC minis range (I think there's a sage).

Wizards' model makes it difficult to do, since the NPCs would be no direct use in the skirmish game and buyers from that market would feel cheated. They should be capable of releasing accessory and NPC boxes, just as accessory kits for Mage Knight Dungeons etc have been released.

Actually I'd like to see GW release some multipose plastic townsfolk also ...

Basically if they are on par with WOTC and only a bit more expensive then I say yes.
I also agree about having different figures. Lots of females please and I don't mean
chainmail bikini's ;)
I have female players in my group and I nearly own all the WOTC minis (I like them) but do not have figures for them (Female Kalashtar and Female Artificer)
