Have Alu-fiends been release by WotC in 3.# or are they basically half fiends and teiflings?

No official release that I've seen, though half-fiend is probably the way to go. Same for cambion.

What are Alu-fiends anyway? I think of them as a sort of aluminum-based monster, but that is probably false.

Alu-fiends were/are female half demons, usually the duaghters of succubi. Cambions were/are male half demons.

I use the half-fiend template to repersent them now, just tweak them a little, if needed.

Yeah, there are a few official references that use this convention too, though the cambion moniker is more common for half-fiends.

As already stated, the Tome of Horrors has a conversion that is a little more true to the 1e/2e version, but you might want to photocopy the old pic and tape it over the awful one in ToH.

WotC pretty much just replaced all the specific types of half-fiends with a one size fits all half fiend template that we got in the MM. At least in my 3e MM (not sure about 3.5), the template description mentions that sometimes half fiends are called cambions. Whereas there's Alu-Fiends, three different types of Cambions, and far as I know there wasn't ever a real convention for half Baatezu offspring (Baatezu females being sterile, and Baatezu males not having the 'will do anything that moves, and even most stuff that doesn't' attitude that Tanar'ri of either gender had. Yugoloths didn't have any specific convention either, and even if they did parent such half-'loths, they'd not admit to it probably. Except for the whole Kylie the Tout is my namesake's granddaughter. Ignore that. I admit nothing. ... I was young and needed the money...

I doubt that we'll get the specific terms for specific subtypes of half fiends anytime soon. We'll get at least a half dozen elf subtypes before then though I can almost assure you.
