I'm no game supremecist, in fact I love M:tG, but I will take a moment to nitpick your analogy.

Colors in Magic matter. They don't matter for every individual card, necessarily. But they do matter for the overall theme of the collection of cards given that particular color.

I find it hard to take color themes seriously, because they've changed so much over time. And because, like you said, the themes are only tendencies rather than rules. I suppose those tendencies might matter to players who go to game events and play decks that they make out of booster packs on the spot, but casual players can take their pick of hundreds of cards which makes those tendencies pretty irrelevant.

I want to play M:tG again...what was I talking about?
