If one were to desire to run an Ameresque campaign is there anything more appropriate to use than UA's Gestalt characters?

What aspects of Amber are you looking to use? I mean the sheer power of the characters in that game makes me want to just say use D&Dg and ELH

I would be expecting to get there quick enough but you really have tobuild up to having a list of powers that large.

The aspect I am most looking for is the players being significantly more then most of the world(s) around them but not overwhelmingly so. I would prefer caution still be part of their vocabluary. Most of the conflict for the game would come from limited resources and each other.

Just something I've been making notes on for a few years now and am always looking for that idea that makes it coaless.

Okay, then Gestalt is a good way to start. You might also look to allowing other options like the bloodline traits or templates without the coasts. As long as the cost on them was equal before you got rid of it, balance between players should hold up.

I suggest starting each character with 10 Outsider Hit Dice plus their choice of Half-Celestial or Half-Fiend template, followed by 6 gestalt class levels to bring the ECL to 20. Perhaps nix the wings and spell-like abilities in exchange for the ability to Plane Shift and Greater Teleport at will. They will be epic characters with a broad base to stand on, but will lack some of the "deep-fried madness" of the level 17+ casters.
