An animal-based campaign?

i ran a camp once (or at least a few sessions) where the characters were animals that were awakend by a druid whose grove was becoming overrun by orks.

two of the PC's were Apes (one barbarian and one druid), one was a cheetah (monk, hellasious speed) and one really annoying squirl (sorc)

the players really seemed to like it and they really got into roleplaying how an ape would think, or how difficult it was for a cheetah to not want to eat the squirrl that wouldnt shutup.

You could check some online web comics for some ideas for adventures based off this concept, and remember, the characters don't have to be equal to the NPC races if they never fight them.

I'm sure there are others out there, but I haven't really come across them yet. Of course, if you want a darker setting, you're probably going to end up on your own, but shameless rips from stuff like this should help with a fun-based campaign.

How dare you talk that way about the mighty ClikClik!!!
You may see him as being annoying at low levels....but wait till you see Epic level ClikClik!!!!

"Huge tremendous world destroying magical power!! .....Itty Bitty Caster... "

A campaign based off or similar to Secret of Nimh could be very interesting and fun indeed..

You could use the the core classes and such for animals..

  • Ability Scores - Just have characters start with the base ability scores of the chosen animal.
  • HitPoints - give them HD and HP at first level equal to the animal and then only give their Con modifier each time they level.
Just a few ideas of the top of my head

Touched by the Gods, one of the Penumbra books, has a Pr. class designed for characters reincarnated as animals. That might be adaptabel for an animal-based campiagn.

'Secret of NIMH'? The movie based on the book 'Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH' I take it... that book was very cool, I still remember weeping at the finale. (I'm not ashamed! Real men can cry!) The sequel (by the original author's daughter?) was a little weak, but the rats had constructed themselves a nice little hydrodam somewhere in the wilderness and... actually, it reminded me a little of NORAD except without the weapons.

The cool thing about a campaign like that would be the sheer godlike power of humans and their ilk. Balancing it would be murder, though.

I started a campaign for my wife and daughter. My wife wanted to play a Hathran Witch and my daughter is playing a character based on Tiger of the Wind from "Monster Rancher".

I'm setting it up so that the Witch is assigned to find out why the Tiger was freed from a medallion of Lurue, the deity of talking beasts. They will find out that Tiger must gain the powers of Earth, Fire and Water in order to assist the Witches in killing the Hag Queen residing in Citadel Rashemar. The Hag is working for Talos in trying to wrest Water portfolio from Umberlee. Whether this succeeds depends on the PCs actions. It allows for some growth of the characters, but has a reasonable, but flexible, limit on the length of the campaign.

I'm also using my old "Into the Unknown" module and the updated "Quest for the Unknown" by Kenzer. Some of the updated info from Kenzer makes it a better storyline to play around with. I'll also be using the missing Rogahn and Zelligar along with the "Keep on the Borderlands" module for the next stage of their quest.

I'm pondering whether the ToEE map would be a good basis for Citadel Rashemar. The elemental nodes would be kind of appropriate for Tiger to gain some of her missing aspects but I'm not sure if I want them to be all in one location.

Wow! I didn't think I would get that many responses. :D Im also surprised that some have had adventures like this, too.

Does anyone have any information to actually run this type of campaign?

I had a friend who was always tinkering with the idea of a campaign where the characters were the famiilars and animal companions of adventurers.

I have a one shot called "Missing Masters, or 'holy cow NONE of us have opposable thumbs!'" which I've run a couple of times and will do again at arisia this year (if the scheduling people ever get back to me). The cast includes an awaked bat druid, a reincarnated orc (now badger) with nasty barbarian ranks, a mindswitched psi warrior now in the body of a cat, a psuedodragon familiar, a celestial riding dog (palidan's mount) and a psicrystal named Scuttle. The epic level adventuring party they 'belong to' goes missing and they have to track them down.
