QUOTE]All of these themes are too limited to be picked. The winning settings will be ones in which any of the above themes--or any other themes--can be explored. It needs to be a place where all of us can feel at home.[/QUOTE]

Wouldn't a world that has FR, DL, GH, Ravenloft, Darksun, Mystara, Council of Wyrms, BirthRight, Gamma World (limited), SpellJammer and other original (but not original) elements be a great setting?

Mine was set in the golden age of magic in a world of flying islands above an ocean that had been taken over by evil dragons. The PCs are all evil demons who must cause the apocalypse.

Phew - at least I was original !

Common World Themes

"I've been skimming a lot of threads on different sites and have come up with the following common world themes..."

Sometimes to be truley unique, you can't be afraid to go past the familiar. These motifs are there, because, we as readers and players enjoy them. They embody some of the deepest shared universal beliefs of humanity. The trick is to use one of these common themes and outdo every other writer, or potential writer that used it. In otherwords...

Dark Sun, "outduned" Dune.
Ravenloft "out-vamped" Dracula
FR "out-detailed" OZ, Alice in Wonderland, Conan and many others.

We had to reel in our imaginations, use the same themes but in a new or different way that other players can relate to without appearing as a hack.

For me, I went with a Sesame Street themed world. I'm trying to bring new players into the hobby at an earlier age, it will help expand the RPG industry.

Sucks. Another month before we get to see folks post their one pagers. Oh, well.

I have been thinking of posting a couple of proposals that I didn't send in. One of them was okay, except that under "What's New? What's different?" it said "Nothing much. That's the point."

This is an excellent point. In order for new material to continue to be written about your world, it needs to have room for all terrains, all fantasy races, and all campaigns. It needs to allow for jungle warfare, submarine adventures, and journeys to underground Dwarven strongholds... and be totally original!

Mine does all those! do I win by default? ;)

The thing that suprised me about WotC's announcement was the number of submissions they recieved. I thought they'd get well over 10,000, closer to 100,000. For the amount of money they're offering you would think that everyone with a homebrew campaign world would have sent in a submission, most of them several submissions. I guess there are just fewer active DMs than I thought...

More than 10?

I'm surprised no one has entertained the idea yet that there could be more than 10 going into the next round. The submission agreement stated " approximately ten (10) settings Wizards would like to see developed" will be selected. Obviously they got more submissions than they originally thought they would get, don't you think it makes sense that they may take their loophole and ask for more than just 10 10 page treatments? With the word approximately thrown in it is open to interpretation.
