And the mystery race is...hated

"Lizardy" just probably can't compete at higher levels. We know that dwarves are getting dwarfy abilities that click well with the fighter, as indicated by someone mentioning a fighter taking the "Touch with the Earth" or somethinglikethat ability.
If they can't make reptilian work at high levels without resorting to fire breath and wings then I shudder to think what they will do to make humans competitive.

Knee-jerk reaction: ???!!! ... Ew.

But then my brain takes over and says wait and see.

I would have liked to see gnolls or hobgoblins ... wait, scratch that. Not gnolls. Maybe bugbears.

Yeah.

Bugbears or hobgoblins.

I wonder if they(dragonborn) will still look ridiculous like in 3e?

Edit: spelin'

Okay, I've reconsidered. They had to shake up the races somehow purely for marketing purposes (vanilla won't sell anymore next to WoW), and it could be a lot worse. Tieflings, weird elves, dragondudes...this is probably the least worst thing that could happen.

It's better than pureblood orcs being in there - at least people playing dragonborn won't have carte blanche to act like jerks based on roleplaying a racial stereotype.

Well, I suppose I wouldn't have minded lizardmen as a new race, and I can pretend dragonborn are just lizardmen I guess. Not exactly an inspiring choice.

My dragonborn Dragon Shaman just got himself a Dragonsword +3! Awesome! I hope my Dragon god, Bahamut, doesn't mind that I use it to clear the dragonrats out of The Don't Let Your Butt Dragon Inn.

Seriously, why the hell did they keep Dragonborn a "mystery" race?!?!? Did they really believe that everyone was going to love it when it got revealed? Why not... oh, I don't know... reveal all the races early, find out that one of them made the D&D community vomit in their mouths and then AXE that race.

I got enough crap from one of my players because I didn't allow ewoks in my saga game which was pre-ewok discovery time period. And quite frankly I would of killed his character in the opening scene even if the game was post there discovery.

I really prefer when everything in my PH is generic enough that I don't fel the need to ban anything. Dragonfolk seem like something I'd ban in most the setting I make up.

The PHB needs to just have the Warrior, Skill User and Spellcaster classes, and the Human.

Everything else should be sold to us in supplements.

No thank you. I'd rather buy one book than twelve.

That was Sarcasm.

Sorry, I don't go here much. What has changed? Are they still plane-touched and descended from fiends?
As I said to Stone Dog on this very page:
It's been said there was an "ancient tiefling empire that had made pacts with devils" or something. I'm willing to put money on Tiefs "breeding true", as their own race, rather than just 10,000 characters with "My great grandfather was a pit fiend."
