I suspect Andy Collins was talking about the attribute that is most important to the core of the character concept, the essence of the class, rather than saying a wizard is nothing but a blaster.

Yeah, 4E's going to focus more on being an MMORPG but without the convenience and pretty graphics, but better support. It'll be dungeon crawling and similar adventuring without the 'baggage' of clever tricks, roleplay, and other fluffy marshmallows that we've come to enjoy from 2E and 3E. :\

Keep it in context. He is comparing that to a wizard being forced to pick up a crossbow and firing in combat because he ran out of spells.

He's trying to point out that being a wizard is about using magic, not running out of magic and trying to figure out how to be useful.

Yeah. That's why I've given wizards unlimited cantrips & used the "MUs can do mundane things in magical ways" bit from the old "Color of Magic" Dragon article.

It still really stuck out as a very strange way to put it to me, that suggests the gap between the designers' preferences & mine might be wider than I thought.

I keep thinking that the key to me enjoying this game is going to be to try to think of it less as a new edition of D&D and more as just a new game. To accept it on its own terms instead of comparing it to other editions.

Taking a single line like that out of context is never going to paint an accurate picture of what the person is saying. A tactic used by fearmongers everywhere.
