Animal as Cohort?

Can you have an animal as a cohort?
Or does a cohort generally have to be an intelligent creature?

Also, should a special cohort have Elite Array stats or Nonelite/Standard Array?

What do you think? :)

I don't see a rule forbidding animals as cohorts, but the way the rules are written it seems to be assuming classed NPCs rather than monsters. Also, I don't see how you could apply your "leadership" abilities to attract a tiger as a cohort (rather than as a predator).

In any case, the PHB is quite clear that the DM decides if a cohort is appropriate.

Yeah, that's a given. I'm just curious what people think about this or how other DM's would decide. :)

3.0 DMG Table 2-27: Example Special Cohort has a Dire Wolf which is an Animal with Intelligence 2

But I'd make the animal cohort be Awakened so it can gain class levels as the PC gains levels. Cohorts in my game have slightly above average stats, same as my players. The awakened snail cleric cohort in my game was great fun. :)

I'm not a DM, and I play a ranger, so I'd definitely allow it. :)

Seriously, I think it'd be OK from a game balance point of view (the cohort would probably be less useful because it wouldn't advance in a class), but I wouldn't allow it unless the player had a different spin on the Leadership feat.

Think of this: A paladin stands up in the public room of an inn and addresses the crowd. He gives an inspiring speech, ending with "Who will accompany me on my righteous quest?" No one says a word, but a pig comes galloping in from the pen out back. :)
