Another name for the Warlord: Ayran

Ayran is a very bad name. I don't want to have a class which is named after an milk product.

And why all this aryan compareisation? Thats probably the first time I hear someone complain that Ayran (which when spoken sounds very differently than aryan) complains about it being to similiar to a nazi word.

1) Because of context.
2) Baceuse we are able to uadnrstned wdros, eevn if the sqeuecne of the ltteres is srcabmled (well, at least it's not too much). If you don't know aobut the milk porduct, your brain spits out the most lkiely word, you get out of the ltertes.

Cheers, LT.

Actually, the WotC people have agreed that the best word is Warlord.
That doesn't engender much trust in their other judgements, then, because that's a stinker of a "best word". :\

"Warmage" sounds like something you get when you sit by a fire.

Well. It's funny how it goes - all this talk about the Warlord has only managed to make the name more endearing to me. :) I do use a homebrewed class called the Noble for a similar type of role, but eh. Warlord's fine as it is!

I know those! They were the premade characters from the G1-2-3 modules!
Ooh, ooh...here's my contribution to "in the style of" G1-2-3 premades:

Wurkblurgle Nidgytotchits

And a new WOTC character class:

Warstache (draws powers of WAR from the PC's moustache. Women who take this class grow one. WARforged can take this class too, if they borrow someone else's moustache and glue it on. Leads into the WARbarber prestige class. Very common in Eberron, which was originally named WARforged. Art to be painted only by WAR.)

The Enworld hive mind has spent quite some time thinking of a better word, and still didn't get come up with any. So Wizards doesn't do too badly. In fact, I think they get too much hate for names in general. Fantasy names just tend to sound cheesy, and only get better by hearing them constantly.

Well, except for bad legacy names perhaps, like Tiefling. Those I dislike, but I know grognards would get in a killing frenzy if they were changed.

Means nothing, because warlord itself was probably chosen by committee.* Look no further than democracy and the interweb to understand that sometimes the majority make the worse decisions.** Sometimes you need a benevolent dictator to overrule the hoi polloi. :D

*: Not just hyperbole. Writing committees tend to make TERRIBLE decisions. Exhibit A: Hollywood scriptwriter committees.

**: And sometimes unexplainable "wisdom of crowds", collectively gut feeling the way to a truth that no specific individual has access to, to cut the other way.

Yes they have. All they need to do is find something more generic. It's not a titanic task. I've suggested "champion", that's my preference, and it's extremely generic, but anything would do which lacks the connotations of "warlord". Most of the alternatives suggested also suck because they carry their own baggage. They could even use the Gygax technique of "redefining" a dustbinned word, ala cleric or paladin.

I dunno. I've been called grognard, but I think cambion's better than tiefling, for instance.

The name that everyone will accept for the class:

Fuehrer

Goes great with the tiefling!

(I think it may even beat Rubber Ducky.)
Well, If you translate "Führer" to English, it means "Leader".
But it's isn't exactly an synonym in English.

Leader is then the most obvious choice, but since the role is also called "Leader", it wouldn't work well...

I do not care for the name "warlord," but I have come to agree with those who say just change the name in your game if you do not like it. If I use the class and 4th edition, I will come up with a campaign specific name just like I do with the other classes.
