Another name for the Warlord: Ayran

Names (or as WotC would call it: Alphabetical tags of the Green Unicorn order

I just wish they won't fool around with names, even if it made sense. Not that always doing this was a bad thing. I like wizard more than magic-user.

Barbarian stays barbarian, not berserker.
Cleric, not Priest.
Marshal over Warlord, but what about Cavalier for it? I could live with warlord.
Fighter, not warrior.
Wizard, not mage or m-u.
Rogue I'm used too but I do miss Thief.

I do not care for the name "warlord," but I have come to agree with those who say just change the name in your game if you do not like it.
What is it that makes everyone assume that everyone else in the forum is the DM for their group? If I don't like warlord, period, even when I'm not the DM, then this isn't an ideal solution.

But is there really an ideal solution? Is there really another name that most people will be more tolerant of, if not happy with?

I've suggested "champion", that's my preference, and it's extremely generic, but anything would do which lacks the connotations of "warlord".

Champion doesn't work, since it implies leadership in absolutely no way. Achilles was the Greek champion, but he was no leader.

Warlord's connotation, aside from anything else, is that you are a combat leader.

He was an example to the other troops, which is leadership. I'd be inclined to go easy on the whole "I'm the leader, just because I picked this class" thing, anyway, because it's bound to be a recipe for discord in some gaming groups.

Being able to read a lot into "champion" is a good thing, whereas warlord is far too specific, which is a bad thing. But I don't have my heart set on that term, it's just an example of something which doesn't have the severe problems "warlord" does.

I disagree. Warlord's connotation is someone who's seized political power and rules by heavy-handed or despotic military means. The bottom line is that a class by this name doesn't belong in an adventuring party, except maybe for a high level armies and nations campaign.

A "warlord" without an army and nation is like a wizard without magic. Adventuring parties are not armies, nor do they generally rule nations until high level. It just Does Not Make Sense.

Before I go into the name, I think a new way of thinking is required about the whole naming thing in general.

So far, we have been obsessed with finding a new that fits the "leader" concept but that fits the standard historical and fantasy cues. But that's a limitation we don't need. For example, to this day arguments are seen on enworld about the ranger archetype. People still don't feel that the mechanics of the ranger fit the archetype they see in their head.

So why not make up a word. As long as the word is cool sounding, sounds sufficiently "bad-ass" without being so awesome it couldn't fit a 1st level character.

So here's my attempt: Ayran (prounounded I - ran)

Ayran is a celestial word that best translates as "Inspiring Soul". It has had many uses over the years. In some cultures, the name literally means leader, and has the same meaning as king. However, more commonly it is given as a description, often a compliment, to one who has shown great courage and concern for others.

And Ayran, Ayran so far away...
Ayran, Ayran all night and day...
I couldn't get away.

How about following an existing WOTC naming scheme then.

For example: Warheart, Warsoul, or Warmind.

Are those any better/worse than Warlord though? I don't think so.

I really don't want another 'made up' class name (and Warmage, Duskblade, Favored Soul etc, etc are all made up names to me). I think Warlord is the best of the lot
