Another type of EN World Store

Ok, so we have the EN World store for RPG stuff. I was thinking that maybe there is a pretty vast untapped market for other types of merchandise that EN World users would like to buy -- I'm thinking video/dvd, computer games, and non-RPG books.

First task would be to see if amazon.com still does its affiliate program. If not, see if there is another online store that does. Then, you'd want to set up something fairly automatic so lots of people could contribute links to lots of products in lots of categories. Have one or two volunteer "librarians" to kind of make sure stuff ends up in the right categories and that all items have their links working so as to generate funds for the site.

Let's consider just books, for example. In addition to tons of great sci-fi/fantasy fiction works, there are many interesting non-fiction books that make great resources for fantasy, sci fi, and modern RPGs. Reference books on gemstones; historical works on ancient warfare or guilds of the middle ages; books about various conspiracy theories; etc.

The non-fiction stuff could kind of be arranged by major chapters/sections of the core D&D books. The "classes" section might have a link to a book on historical druids, the Vikings, gladiators, etc. The section of the DMG about different terrains could have links to books about survival or travel or wildlife of mountains, desserts, arctic, etc.

I dunno -- maybe this is too huge of a project. But at least I think having an EN World store for DVD/Video and computer games makes a lot of sense if there's a site willing to partner up with us.

The only problem is that most users are US based, and unless the monthly cheques turned out to be pretty big, it's not worth the hassle of me dealing with US cheques on a regular basis. Each takes a month to clear and costs me to cash.

I'm lucky with RPGShop because James is willing to go out of his way to make things convneient for me, but something like Amazon wouldn't do that.

Amazon does indeed to its affiliates program, for what it's worth.

Well, I could do amazon.co.uk, but I don't think that'd help for most people.

Well this money wouldn't have to go you you directly -- it could go to, say, Kevin, and he could spend it over here on your behalf for various server-related thingies or to pay for ENnies bills or whathaveyou. Or pass it on to you in some other way. The downside of that is this counts as taxable income for the person who is collecting it for the site, but I'm sure some kind of arrangement could be made.

Wouldn't that mean that they'd pay by VISA as per normal (and uh, get stitched up by the current conversion rate. I see what you mean!)

And, presumably, have transatlantic shipping costs and times.

Nothingland had affiliate programs for the .com, .co.uk, .de, and .fr Amazons. So it's possible to do the same for ENWorld, and have several affiliate programs.

Speaking of RPG Shop, I've a weird problem with my first order there, and I'm desperately waiting for a reply from custserv... The Paypal transaction is made, but RPG Shop behaves as if I had never ordered anything...

Edit: Got my reply, problem solved.
