Another word for 'Troll'

Sounds like I'm filling out a crossword, but really, I just have two different sources that I want to include in my game. I like the official troll, but I also like the Trollborn race from the 2E Vikings book. For anyone who doesn't know, the Trollborn are half-human decendants of a "troll" race that is very good with sorcery, rather smart, and really ugly.

In my game, I've removed the human side and just made northern trolls into their own race. They favor psionics, are big (massive build) and average intelligence. Their psi is a manifestation of their connection to the plane of shadow and any psi manifested by a troll will use shadow in place of ectoplasm.

Anyway, background aside, I need to change the name of one of the races. Any suggestions?

The etymology might give you a few ideas, although they're all fairly similar:

Main Entry: troll
Function: noun
Etymology: Norwegian troll & Danish trold, from Old Norse troll giant, demon; probably akin to Middle High German trolle lout
: a dwarf or giant in Scandinavian folklore inhabiting caves or hills

Also jotun/ettin is pretty much the same idea, although if you're also using the two-headed ettins of the MM, you can't use that one, obviously. Jotun might work, though.

Hmm... I'm not overly fond of the two-headed ettin. I could just eliminate the MM critter and snag the name. I'll be interested to see more suggestions, though.

I like the "demon" correlation, though, for the psi/magic wielding northern race.

Ogre is another idea, but that would make things confusing if you were using D&D Ogres, too.

I like the suggestion of Jotun. :)

going along this route. the Ogre Magi would work too for the psi guy/ regen/ other race troll.

When naming a race there are really three things to consider, what they call themselves, whatevery one else calls them, and if these two things are different.

A troll like race that you descirbe could be umbrakin to outsdiers, due to the connection to the plane of shadow and its manifestation; while they might call them selves after the name of their god, Lokians to make a nod from the Viking idea, or just something that means "people" in their tounge, which you could make just about anything "Ved" for example.
If you want to go with an established word, I like Jotun.
