Anthor one of my spells

First Post
Heres anther one of my spells.

Wulgar's Energy Enhanser (Fire)
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wizard 1
Components: S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 0 ft.
Target: Caster
Duration: 1 round + 1 round/caster level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: no

Two balls of red energy form on your hands. If the duration of the enhanced spell is Instantaneous then that spell deals extra damage equal to 1d4/two caster levels, to a maximum of 5d4. If it has a greater duration, then each time that the enhanced spell deals damage, that damage is increased by 1d4, until the spell ends normally, the duration of Wulgar's energy enhancer ends, or a total of 5d4 extra damage has been dealt. This only affects fire spells and only the fire part of them.

sounds a bit too beefy to me, without more specific/restrictive wording.

Imagine, for example, a mage learning the cold version of this spell and then casting ray of frost all the time. Good way to turn all your cantrips into 1st-level spells.

But if it flies in your campaign, I guess it's fine.

I actually find the spell pretty balanced. Burning hands or magic missle is the equivalent. I'd put a limit of only the first 2 spells (each using one of the energy orbs).

I would make it one of those where you just "choose" the element. There does not need to be 5 different ones for the 5 elements.

Actually, I would suggest only one spell be enhanced. A first level spell is not supposed to deal more than 5 dice of damage - and used with a cone of cold or a fireball this damage is going to be dealt out over a larger area than any first level spell usually can be.... if it can deal effectively different types of energy it becomes even more useful - and can also be combined with spells against which there is no save (like ice storm.)

What about spells like flaming sphere that can deal damage each round? Does it add to the first round's damage only? To each round? A smaller amount to each round? How would it work with flame blade or produce flame?

Having said that, if you address those issues, I think that it would make one of the better-designed spells I've seen on these boards.

Caveat: I noticed that it is S component only. To be effectively silent for no level cost is another big advantage that should be taken into account in the balancing process IMHO.

Might I suggest some slightly clearer wording, along the lines of:

"If the duration of the enhanced spell is Instantaneous then that spell deals extra damage equal to 1d4/two caster levels, to a maximum of 5d4. If it has a greater duration, then each time that the enhanced spell deals damage, that damage is increased by 1d4, until the spell ends normally, the duration of Wulgar's energy enhancer ends, or a total of 5d4 extra damage has been dealt.

If the spell enhanced does not normally allow a saving throw to reduce damage dealt, then a successful Reflex save will still halve the extra damage dealt due to this spell."

(I actually think that it would be OK to attach it to 'no-save' spells like flame blade, because they require an attack roll in place of a save, so the second paragraph could be omitted IMHO. I had just wondered whether you'd considered it or not...)

Anyway, nice spell concept :)

Looking forward to your next one.
