George Carlin once said that if you nail two things together that have never been nailed together before, some schmuck will come along and buy it. The marketability of the PS3s and Wiis is directly related to this idea. The things that they nailed together are simply interesting to a great many people.
The term, "more dollars than sense," also comes to mind, though. But that is coming from someone who has rarely had the money to throw away on things of this nature.
It occurs to me that she is wrong in saying that these people should get a life, because that is exactly what they're doing. They are being consumers, which, honestly, is what earning money is for, to get the stuff you need. Getting the stuff you want as well is a measure not only of success in this day and age, it's also what makes having to go through the B.S. of gaining the fiscal wherewithal worthwhile.
We're all of us just blobs of protoplasm supported by rigid frames, knocking around, saying, "How are ya, Phil? Gimme a piece o' lettuce."--George Carlin, again, paraphrased. We're all just trying to get there, wherever "there" is.

This lady, while entitled to her opinion, is more wrong than anyone, really, who spent so much money or time trying to get the next big distraction, because she has the same attitude--although in passive form--as those in the lines that hurt other people to get the thing they wanted. Not that I think her loudly-voiced opinion will change anything at all, because even if she made somebody think about the uselessness of their actions, they'd be more likely to think, "I should get my wife/husband to game with me. That way we could spend more time together," instead of seeing their actions as the obsessive things they can be.
It's kind of like when my son tries to get my attention by screaming, butting into my wife's and my conversations, or any of the other tricks he uses. The most likely result of words like the diatribe at the beginning of this thread is anger, or at least resentment, and will lead to further scathing words directed at her, which could in turn lead to a nasty response. Escalation is how wars get started.

Visualize whirled peas. :)

No, you NEED food to keep you from starving.

With things like PS3 and iPods -- as well as D&D -- they're just WANTS. The misperception is that they think they NEED or MUST-HAVE them.
