Are there any books on familiars out there in print?

Specifically ones with lots of new familiars for beginning characters.

Mongoose just came out with Encyclopedia Arcane: Familiars, written by "That Privateer Press Guy" Joseph Miller, who posts as jaldaen on these boards.

After more intensive reading and consideration, I became wholly dissatisfied with the Mongoose product and sold it back to my local game shop (at a loss). Although it has a few decent ideas, the long list of sample familiars is still sorely lacking in animals that players would actually use (instead including such creative examples as centipedes and camels(?!)). The niftiest element of note would be alternative level progressions for familiars, tweaking their abilities ever so slightly to more closely represent their utility to their masters.

I am sorry you did not like EA: Familairs... it was intended to be a book of alternative rules and I believe some might have picked it up thinking it would provide a definative list of "normal" familiars... instead it concentrates on alternative types of familiars from fey to undead... I do wish I had had 128 pages to work with as then I would have definately spent a large section on sample familiars... instead with only 64 pages to work with I could only include the "Top Eleven" as voted on here at ENworld over a year ago. I do wish I had know how Mongoose was going to layout the book as a look over it again gives me the impression that I could have fit another couple pages into it by them not reprinting the tables that were on the inside cover and just refering readers to them at the appropriate point in the text. That would have been another three or four sample familiars...

Take Care,
Joseph Miller

PS: I am glad you liked the alternate paths of infusion... were there any other areas you particularly liked or disliked? Do you think something in particular was unbalanced or was it just not what you were looking for in a Familiars book (understandable since it is full of alternative rules rather than exposition on the core)? Thanks ;-)

For my money...

For my money, the best source of Familiar material out there is in FFG's Spells & Spellcraft. While S&S is expensive just for a few (half a dozen to a dozen) pages on familiars, I do believe most (if not all) of it was reprinted in their "Mastercraft Anthology" book. The MA book is a mere $5 and definitely worth picking up (unless you already own all the FFG books of course).

That is what I am seeking.

Something that gives more familiar choices for the level one character.

Any familiar book should start there, then go on to oddball ideas after that.

That book was interesting, but gave no help in creating familiars for level one characters, nor where any the sample familiars clear as to weather or not you could start with them or even what you had to do to get them later on.

Some of them were quite clearly not for beginners...

As a result of this oversight, I have been unable to find a way to use that resource.
