Any experience with the new Disintegrate yet?

Hiyas!

I was wondering recently about the usefulness of the new Disintegrate spell. Has anyone experienced the spell in actual gameplay? How does it perform?

Is it compareable to it's competitors (stuff like Slay Living, Finger of Death, Destruction, and the like), or is it just a damage spell, like Scorching Ray now?

IMC, it is not quite as popular as it used to be, but it still remains a powerful offensive spell. I think my PC's like the change as well, as they can fail the save and not be killed. At the level it is used, a lot of the appropriate CR creatures still must save or die. The high damage potential also works well with metamagic, and the ever present Death Ward does not help, nor are undead immune as they are to [death] effects. Plus, Disintegrate is a very utilitarian spell. Not much else affects force barriers. I see it used as much for utility as offense. A clever sorceror with disintegrate can really mess up a DM's plans.

I cast it when I went home and played with my old DM and character for one session.

It's still the same old disintergrate IMHO, with a different mechanic. Kinda a pain to roll for, but kinda fun too.

re

Its not all that bad IMO. Still very deadly. Quite good at killing undead and rogue and wizardly types. Still gives alot of bang for the buck.

Most of the time we dont even roll for it. I quickly calculate the "lower end" of the average damge the victim might recieve and if thats enough to kill it....bye bye.

Lets say with 20d6 I calculate 20x3 and not 20x3.5
if the result (60) is enough to bring it down easy ---> no roll.

I used it on an 11th level monk IMG last week. 26d6 turned him into dust. That's the first time I have been able to use the spell since the revision.

If I ever play a character high enough level to cast it, I'm planning on taking it. Regardless of anything else, it's still a cool spell.

I'm also planning on trying to talk my DM into letting me use the Craft Nexus feat from Quintessential Wizard. One of the powers you can place in your Nexus is the feats Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot...but only on ray spells you cast personally. The ray appears to emanate from the Nexus. I like the sound of this. :D

I only memorize it if I have to clear rubble or do some carvern remodling.

Its good in combat once in a while but not near as reliable as it was. Fun to Empower but Chain Lighting is more fun.

I'd rate it at about half of what it was.

I've seen it used by my players ... that, and the barbarian, are the #1 reasons why I have to use only monsters with lots of hit points.

It dishes out insane amounts of damage, more when Empowered. No one can Maximize it yet, though.

Use Rod of metamagic: Maximize. You can also empower it that way...

Disintegrate is also funny spell now as you can make a critical with it :). Roll 4d6/lvl :P.
