Has there been any news on the new GammaWorld for d20 Modern?

Morganti

There was an extensive thread at RPGnet in which Bruce Baugh first revealed the license and answered many questions. Just search for "d20 Gammaworld" and it should come right up.

I'm really looking forward to this one.
Hope that they do it justice.
+ don't forget that there will be a d20 Modern version of Darwin's World out as well.

I wonder if gamma will becomes succesful when darwin comes out like 4 months ahead.

Actually, what are the differences between these two exactly? When I think of holocaust, I imagine Fallout, not some spacy stuff. Do they both equate to this genre?

Gammaworld is the grandaddy of post apocalyptic RPGs. IIRC it is over 20 years old if you count in Metamorphsis Alpha and this is its 6th version. It has a huge fan base though they have been dicked around by some last few versions of Gammaworld IMO.

Gammaworld will be much more successful than Darwin's World (which is heavily inspired by Gammworld). GW has heritage, an existing fan base, previous published material and Sword and Sorcery Studios (an offshoot of White Wolf) behind it. Bruce Baugh the developer has been involved with Nobilis, Adventure! and a number of RPGs that have been successful recently. There are already 3 supplements for Gammaworld that I am aware of (bestiary, exploration and big book o' stuff).

I am not saying that Darwin's World is bad by a long shot but GW6 has so much going for it, especially as GW was one game that many D&D players actually played outside D&D and the lack of competition for d20 Modern settings.

GW is not spacey though there is high tech (but the in game view of this is more like "ooooooh magic"). It has similarities to Fallout. Bruce Baugh's quote on the similarities with Fallout is: "...despite the absence of plant PCs, this is going to be pretty exuberant stuff. It will be possible to pull out just the relevant bits to do dark and gritty, but I don't have that as a major priority." GW is a strange game in that it can be played gritty or goofy. In earlier editions you could play mutated plants (but not in GW6). Bruce Baugh has already expressed a desire to make GW6 a tool kit that supports both the serious side (this is sort of new in that earlier versions tended to ignore this facet) and the shoot big mutated bugs :) Again it can be similar to Darwin's World in general, though Darwin's World tends to be less exuberant as a base.

So you say I shouldn't buy DW but wait some more months for GW ? I don't think I can wait another 1/2 year.

Besides, will there be Dark Matter d20 or some other thriller setting for d20 modern (without fantasy!!) ?

Well GW will be a much better product IMO. However, DW is cheap especially if you grab the PDF and a bit darker.

There is a no Dark Matter d20 in the works, unless you are aware of a secret licensing deal that no one else is :) It has only been produced for Alternity. It would be easy enough to convert over though. Actually most modern settings would be. Have you considered checking out d20 Call of Cthulhu or Spycraft?

As for a thriller setting without magic I can only think of Digital Burn which is cyberpunk from Living Room Games. You could easily do a d20 Bladerunner with it or even a d20 Blue Planet. There is a lack of d20 Modern settings coming out and many include magic :( Also there is d20 Somalia if you want a military campaign and Solid if you want Blaxploitation :D. Also there have been about 6 ot 7 min-games in Polyhedron including Genetech (Dartk Angel), V for Victory (WW2) and a Mecha game.

Also if you aren't going to use magic in the setting then I think you can pretty much use d20 Modern as is. For example you can run d20 Alias, d20 Stargate or d20 Dark Angel straight from the d20 Modern book.

Personally I am most looking forward to Dark Inheritance due out in a few weeks from mythic Games. It does include magic but in a stylish way that I like. The setting looks robust enough that it can easily be played without magic and Titans as setting elements. I am currently planning an X-Files style campaign using Project Titan.
