Many non-artificer characters can't be made with only SRD content either. While all twelve core classes are present, only one subclass is included for each; and likewise, there aren't that many feats -- although at least there's more than the one feat that was included in the 2014 version.
It used to be cheaper to use D&D Beyond for this sort of thing, as once upon a time it supported buying individual classes rather than entire books. That option is long gone.
Yeah, I understand that this is because it was worse of a revenue issue than selling PDF versions of the books were in 3E and 4E. If people only buy the books piecemeal for the parts they want, they're essentially selling the big selling points of those books for a fraction of the cost, and that's really hard to pinpoint a precise value onto and get it right the first time (which they had to, lest people complain about price gouging). The solutions here are there's a subscription level for DMs that let them share their membership and purchases to some extent with their players, and also now buying the books on D&D Beyond is a steep discount from their physical version (as is buying Digital+Physical through DDB, but I still end up buying both separately to support my FLGS and get that sweet sweet alt-cover).
Yeah, even though I love my books the app is good ENOUGh that it's nigh essential at my tables these days.To be fair...at no poont are you ever paying $20 just to make a character of any kind.
And i dont use it to play, and a few ywars ago no one did because it had no vtt option for years. The builder has flaws but it is good enough that i make all my charabcters with it and reference them digitally while playing at the physical table.
