Any thoughts on the Warhammer Role Playing Game?

Yes and what's more Hoghead Publishing is producing material for it still. It is very much alive only the fan base I expect is much smaller than D&D's. The supplements don't come out as quickly as d20 stuff does but I find that the quality of the product is very high. Check out the new race sourcebook for dwarves: Stone & Steel . They have race books coming out for the elves ( and the skaven as well I believe ).

I've never played the Warhammer rpg, but I must say that the Games Workshop website for Warhammer Fantasy and 40k is, imo, the best gaming website in existence. The amount of background info for the setting, artwork galleries, and minis hobby workshop stuff is immense. And yes, Skaven kick ass!

Not that small, actually - the Warhammer World has been popular for a long time thanks to Games Workshop, and the hiatus of WHFRP didn't change that. There are lots of web pages dedicated to it, and WHFRP has a large fan base in Europe (where the setting is "closer to home", so to speak)...

After the D&D family of games (OD&D, AD&D 1E, 2E, D&D 3E), WFRP is my next favourite game. The game world has lots of atmosphere and I particularly like the character progression system through different professions.

The magic system is the weakest point, but Realms of Sorcery which cam out last year is supposed to fix it. I haven't had a chance to try RoS yet though, so I can't say if it does or not.

I always liked the fact, that there are no XP for killing critters in the WHFRPG. That and the deadliness of the combat system teaches the players to use their brains more often than their swords.

I also like the fact that the players aren`t as dependent on magic and magical items as in D&D. Sure it is nice to have them, but you can do without. In the last ten years I gmed the Enemy Within Campaign five times, and two of these groups managed to successfully complete the campaign without having a wizard in their ranks. A good physician is much more usefull for the group.

Ah, the memories of Enemy Within. Funny you mention a Physician. My character?

Pharmacist - Physician - Initiate - Priest lvl 1 - Priest lvl 2 of Shallya. =)

Ah, yes... whenever we play in the Warhammer World, the PCs tend to be a big bunch of misfits. This seems to hold true even though we are now using GURPS...

Our current rooster includes:

(All characters are human)

- A big, strong, dumb fighter who always seems to stab his enemies a few extra times to make sure they are dead.

- a ranger and master crossbos shooter, who was blessed by Taal with the gift of healing.

- A rogue (even though he has started to wear plate mail) who is willing to chat with demon to "hear their side of the story", and who says of one that "he made a pretty good argument".

- A professional gambler.

- A self-proclaimed witchhunter and follower of Solkan, but who is more talk than action and tends to hold pompous speeches and complains when there aren't enough witches to torture.

- And finally, my elementalist mage who has some serious issues after he failed to stop a city getting destroyed by a Chaos God...

How about your Warhammer characters? What kind of personality problems do they have?
