Anybody else up the damage when they up the CR?

So, I'm doing a Destrachan, max HD.
Doing the HD, size, CR, attack, claw damage is as easy as 3.14159...

But what about the special attacks, the destructive harmonics.
The saves are easy 1/2 HD +cha bonus +10.

But should a CR 13 critter be doing 4D6 lethal, 6d6 subdual and '30 pt' sonic?

I normally tie these things to the HD.
Lethal damage is 1/2 HD, so, 12D6
Subdual is 3/4 (or so), so, 16HD
No, sonic is 30 pts, which is an average of the 8 D6.
So, average of 24D6 is 80 pts.

And save for 1/2.
What say you all?

Monster HD advancment can really be thrown out of balance quickly. The CR number tend to be based on the potency of Gaining just the hit die and having saves and attacks go up a notch or three.

Autohit abilities do need an extra bit of caution. Playtesting is usually the best way to be sure.

Compare to a CR 13 dragon is what i'd suggest.

If damage scales with level, like a PC class such as sorcerer or warlock, then CR should also scale with level. That is, if you make the effects proportionate, most monsters should be +1 CR per +1 HD.
 

I make the scurvy dogs take feats that benefit their main attack. They be getting ability focus at the earliest.

The game needs an empower supernatural ability feat, sez I.

[ninja]When I advanced a steel predator from 12HD to 21HD, I also scaled its roar damage. Result: a CR18 critter with a 30' cone of 21d6 sonic, For 27 save for half. Seriously, though, wouldn't you expect this kind of punishment from a CR18?

All average rolls:
8 th level fighter, 14 con = 64 HP
4D6 lethal damage, 14 pts.
Fighter can take 4 hits, at least.
13th level fighter, 14 con = 104 hp
6D6 lethal, 22 pts
Fighter can take 5 hits, maybe.
Not bad.
But 13th level fighter will have better chance of having resistance or protection in the party, and will be able to kill the monster quite quickly, thank you.

Way, way, way too much!

Yer better off walkin' th' plank!
It's not straight 80 pts of damage.
It's what it could effect.
30 pts can take out a +1 shield.
80 pts could take out a +5 shield.
OK, maybe a little much.
:)

And they would have the HD to ability focus, and possibly empower.
